Hiram E. Leonard Diary, February 18 – 24, 1869

18th Thursday  fine weather but muddy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

19th Friday  fine weather with light flury of snow  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble [in margin] R Willson died at Sherman Willsons near Taylorville Iowa at about 11 oclock at night.

20th Saturday  A cloudy raw day, ground covered with snow  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out–.

21st Sunday  snow fell several inches last night & the ground was covered with snow several inches, winterey weather  I did my choars went to the office & back choared round the house wrote some & went to office in the evening came home & went to bed at 9 nearly sick [in margin] R Willson was buried.

22nd Monday  rather fine winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister.

23rd Tuesday  fine weather for Feb  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ & was about sick & worne out with trouble.

24th Wednesday  fine weather for winter  I did my choars was at the office all day came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.”

11th Thursday  fine warm weather & muddy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out, Mrs Stone came back at supper time.

12th Friday  A cloudy muddy warm day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

13th Saturday  I did my choars it was a cloudy forenoon & a rainey afternoon & evening  I was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Mrs Stone went to D Kenyons & stayed after night.

14th Sunday  A warm cloudy foggy morning & broake away some in middle & after part of the day  I did my choars went to the office came home & eat breckfust choared round the house wrote some & went to the office in the evening came home & went to bed at 9 nearly sick & worne out.

15th Monday  fine winter weather for Feb  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

16th Tuesday  fine weather but muddy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

31st Sunday  A fine day for winter & thawing so it was muddy  I did my choars was at the house all day cut up my pigs went to office at night came home & went to bed at about 9 nearly sick Daniel Kenyon & housekeeper came about 11 & stayed to supper & went home about 8 ½ & Ben Hoath came about that time & stayed till ____.

23rd Saturday  a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out  Mrs Stone came & stayed all night.

24th Sunday  A fine day but cold cloudy night & stormed a little  I did my choars was at the house all day about sick with the cold & rheumatism went to the office in evening came back & called at Blisses & see Mrs Lewis came home wrote some & went to bed about 9 sick.

25th Monday  rather fine for winter  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

17th Sunday  a cloudy day with a raw wind but not cold, I did my choars was at the house the most of the called at the office about one choared round the house the rest of the day was at the office in evening came home and went to bed about 9 nearly sick & worne out, Benjamin Hoath came & brought Eliza home about one.

18th Monday  rather a fine day for winter  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

19th Tuesday  a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick etc  Moses Bliss died this morning about 3 oclock after being sick a few weeks.

20th Wednesday  fine winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

7th Thursday  A most beautiful day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Ben Hoath came last night & stayed & carried Caroline & Eliza to Barruses & back today & stayed all night again it commenced raining some time in the night.

9th Saturday  More pleasant & froz  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister.

10th Sunday  A fine pleasant day  I did my choars was at the house the most of the day went to the office in forenoon & evening, choared round the most of the day went to bed about 9 nearly sick  J B Clark called & paid 15 dols that I let Willson have on the lodges acpt.

11th Monday  rather fine winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

12th Tuesday  a fine pleasant day for winter  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Chancy Baly caught James Laird in his bedroom with his wife about 9 oclock this evening & shot him as he was a coming out of the bedroom he got out of the outer door a rod or so & fell ded on a snow drift, Baly went & told Wm Laird & Thomas Finly of it.

13th Wednesday fine weather for Jan & pretty good waggoning  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out with trouble [in margin] got Elizas express package from Warren & paid $2.”

January 1st Friday 1869  A fine day but some cloudy & storny in evening  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble of Sister, nothing new for New Years all still as usual.

2nd Saturday  snowed pretty fast in morning & forenoon more pleasant in afternoon  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister.

3rd Sunday  rather a cloudy day but thawed conciderable about 10 inches of snow on the ground  I did my choars was at the house all day a choaring round & sawing wood went to the office in the evening came home and went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

4th Monday  A fine winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

26th Saturday  A fine winter day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ about sick, Mrs Stone stayed at Rogers.

27th Sunday  rather a fine forenoon but a snowey afternoon & pleasant moonshine evening  I did my choars was at home the most of the day went to office about 10 & in the evening came home wrote some & went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

18th Friday  A fine day for winter good sleighing but thawed conciderable  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  Resseguies & Rogers drew wood for me 4 loads each Jerry Dady chopped.

19th Saturday  A fine warm day & thawed fast spoild the sleighing  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out  Mrs Stone came here from Pelhams & stayed overnight  windy night.

20th Sunday  A windy raw day wind blew hard  I did my choars was at the house all day a choaring round the house, went to the store in the evening came back after calling at Kenyons & went to bed at 9 sick Mrs Stone & Tom Pelham eat supper here & then went home, Reseguie brought the trunk home after he took the buck boar tonight or tomorrow morning at 5 or 6 oclock  [in margin]  William Lamb took the buck  The Wheaton folks got the Recorders about 150 went down after them.

21st Monday  rather a fine cool day grew cold all day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble, Rolen Willson went to Wheaton with L V Resseguie to start in the evening for Shirms Willsons in Iowa, at 10 tonight [in margin] Rollen Willson started for Iowa to Sherm Willsons the Wheaton folks got the recorders books this morning.

22nd Tuesday  A cold pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.
