Hiram E. Leonard Diary, February 24, 1861

24th Sunday A cold pleasant morning & pretty clear, it froze quite hard & froze some in the ketching.  I did my choars was at the house the most of the day a writing etc called at the office once & Hoyts & Wrays in evening came home between 8 & 9 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick with a cold.  Sebe French was married to his second wife in Ohio.”

23rd Saturday A cloudy windy damp misty muddy morning had rained conciderable during last night, was a tedious blustery day & night the wind blew tremendous hard through day & the river rose all day & was pretty high & froz almost all day.  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home by Wrays about ½ past 8 & got home ½ past 9 & soon went to bed about sick with a cold.”

Hiram E. Leonard Diary, February 22, 1861

22nd Friday rather a fine day & more mild but some cloudy.  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening & J. K. Pollard called & we paid Dr. Wellman 150.00 in cash on our comp note, J. K. P went back this afternoon, it thawed verry fast & closed up sleighing & rained during the night & raised the river conciderable, I came home about 9 & soon went to bed tiard & nearly sick.”

“21st Thursday  rather a fine day & evening.  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 1/2 past 8 by Wray & got home a little after 9 & went to bed about sick soon after.  Dr. Wellman got home today about 2 oclock from Michigan , they mooved Jerry Pollard home from Winfield & sent for J. K. Pollard & he got to his fathers in the evening, the sleighing is about finished today.  Jerome Pollard got home tonight.”

Hiram E. Leonard Diary, February 20, 1861

20th Wednesday rather a fine day but cool, I did my choars was at the store all day & in the evening came home about 9 & went to bed about 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold, it is neither good sleighin nor waggoning, Jerry Pollard & Dan Jones went to Winfield after a load of goods for Jerome B. Pollard & stayed from morning till about 3 oclock, Jerrys waggon wheel broak through the ice & went in through nearly up to the hub, pitched him off between the horses & they suppose the wheels run over his face, braking his jaw twice on the side & once on the other and smashing his cheek in & injuring one eye verry much they thought he would not live.  Daniel fell but partly jumped & did not receive much injury.”

19th Tuesday rather a fine day some cloudy.  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home by Wrays & called got home a little after 9 & soon went to bed nearly sick.  Jerome Pollard & wife went to Wheaton & he went west.”
