Hiram E. Leonard Diary, July 28 – August 3, 1864

“28th Thursday fine pleasant hot weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & lonely.

“29th Friday A fine hot day & night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & lonely.

“30th Saturday A fine hot day till about five or past when we had quite a shower & thunder & lightning, a cloudy night, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely and nearly sick as well as down spirited. Kennard was here.

“31st Sunday A cloudy damp morning & forenoon more pleasant in the middle of the day looks like shower hot & muggy. I did my choars was at home the most of the day wrote some & choared round the house went to the office & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & nearly sick & down spirited Henry Gould & family came here & took supper & went home 3 or 4 oclock several showers during the day.

“August 1st Monday rather a fine day but some cloudy. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard nearly sick and lonely.

“2nd Tuesday rather fine weather but some cloudy. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ lonely tiard & nearly sick.

“3rd Wednesday A fine day but some cloudy. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard nearly sick & very lonely.”

“21st Thursday rather fine weather more cool. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

“22nd Friday rather fine weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

“23rd Saturday rather fine weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick or nearly. Charles Ward died of a wound in his ancle by a rebel near Washington he died at or near Washington.

“24th Sunday rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars hunted for my mair about 2 hours found her & George Roll & me started for _______ about 9. Cal & Eliza went in Rols buggy we came ______ before sundown George & wife took Caroline home. I did choars went to bed about 9 tiard & about sick & lonely.

“25th Monday rather fine weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ near sick lonely & tiard.

“26th Tuesday fine hot weather I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick, lonely as death [in margin] Kennard was here.

“27th Wednesday rather fine hot weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.”

“14th Thursday fine dry weather ground suffering for rain. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely, homesick & sick.

“15th Friday A fine had ____ day but very dry, everything a drying up, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely & homesick ______   ______ family came out.

“16th Saturday A very hot still muggy day & evening Showered a good deal during the night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ or near 10, tiard lonely & about sick. There was a circus or caravan at Naperville.

“17th Sunday A warm showery morning some very heavey thunder & one very heavey shower rained till about 10 & brouk away some, I did my choars went to office a little after 10, came back & choared round. Elder Hanna preached Wm J Wrays funeral at 2 oclock P.M. at Methodist House, Carolines folks did not come over, it showered more or less all day.

“18th Monday A cloudy rainey morning with a tremendious heavey shower about 7 or between 7 & 8 in morning, my east celler half full of water in a few minutes or less than an hour. I did my choars went to office & got wet through we had an other shower in afternoon & filled my celler about as full. The river was very high it covered the island conciderable deep a tremendous rain, everything was flooded. I was at the store all day came home at 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ lonely & sick.

“19th Tuesday A _____ cloudy morning the ground very wet more pleasant during day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

“20th Wednesday rather fine weather but very wet. I did my choars, was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick lonely & tiard.”

“7th Thursday A fine day for the season but dry. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick. Charles came from Lewenses & went to Goulds.

“8th Friday A fine dry day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick rained during the night.

“9th Saturday A cloudy misty morning but rather fine after noon, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick, a cloudy evening & rained pretty hard the latter part of the night, & the Methodist bell toled about 12 oclock at night several times supposed by the wind, the best rain we have had this summer or since spring.

“10th Sunday A fine rainey morning & cloudy day the best rain we have had this summer, I got up about 7 did my choars went to the office, came back by Pollards & Mrs Bliss choared round some hoed in garden, went to the office about 12 came back & sowed some turnips wrote some etc did my choars & went to bed at 9 tiard & lonely & nearly sick.

“11th Monday rather fine dry weather, I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

“12th Tuesday rather fine but dry wather. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

“13th Wednesday fine weather for the season but to dry I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & homesick.”
