Hiram E. Leonard Diary, August 17 – 23, 1865

17th Thursday fine hay weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick Caroline & Roxa went to Knox.

18th Friday rather fine hay weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick, Ezra Batchellor came & stayed with Col Warren all night Roxa went to Sociable & stayed all night at Knoxes.

19th Saturday rather a fine day & evening but a light shower in afternoon and another at night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick E Batchellor went home to Lyons and H Wyman came out from Chicago.

20th Sunday rather a fine hot day with a shower about 5 & a cloudy evening I did my choars was at home the most of the day went to the office 3 times did my choars & went to bed about 9 tiard & sick, Roxa LeRoy she that was Roxa Coon was here.

21st Monday rather fine weather, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

22nd Tuesday rather fine weather for the season I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick.

23rd Wednesday A fine day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick, Caroline Wray & Roxa LeRoy went to Naperville & got some things got back about 3.”

10th Thursday rather a cloudy muddy day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

11th Friday rather more pleasant many set out their grain I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & about sick.

12th Saturday rather a fine day & many were a stacking grain I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick Caroline went home on the stage & cars, Mack stacked the most of my oats.

13th Sunday rather a pleasant day but some cloudy I did my choars went to office & back mowed some weeds & chaored round the house etc was about sick went to office near night came home & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick Mr McNelly came about 4 & brought Caroline Wray & Roxa Coor or Roxa Leroy & her husband, he went back with Mr McNelly & Roxa stayed.

14th Monday rather fine hay weather I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick tiard & lonely.

15th Tuesday rather fine hay weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed tiard lonely & nearly sick.

16th Wednesday rather fine hay weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.”

3rd Thursday rather fine weather but some cloudy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick etc rained at night.

4th Friday A damp showery disagreeable day & night, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.

5th Saturday A cloudy damp showerey day & night rained hard, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed 9 tiard lonely & sick [in margin] 2 soldiers with 10 horses stayed at John Waddles all night.

6th Sunday A cloudy damp disagreeable day & evening I did my choars went to office about 9 came back & choared round the house cleaned out the celler etc was round the house the most of the day went to bed about 9 sick Rollen Willson went to Wm McNellys & brought Caroline Wray to Sherman Willsons & stayed all night.

7th Monday rather a fine day & they hayed it some I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 about sick Caroline came back from Willsons.

8th Tuesday rather a fine day but cloudy & rained during the night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick [in margin] Col Warren went & notified the Supervisors.

9th Wednesday A cloudy rainey day, by showers it came down in torrents, one shower between 12 at noon & in afternoon it rained tremendious hard for about 2 hours it came down in torrents washed Connels potatoes & cabbage down dam to me burst my store celler windows in & filled my store celler ¾ full or more while I was up to dinner everything was fludded the river set up to N. Derry shop, it was the hardest shower I ever saw & the most rain fell in one shower, we had but little wind here, but it blew building down in many places an awful shower I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick [in margin] a tremendis heavey shower all round the country.”

28th Friday rather a cloudy damp and more pleasant I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick.

29th Saturday a pretty fine day for haying the best we have had in 2 weeks I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick Rollen Willson came & got Caroline & Walla & took them up to Shermans to stay overnight, & go tomorrow to Willsons.

30th Sunday A fine pleasant cool day I did my choars was round the house the most of the day choaring & went to the office 3 times, I fixed my well roller & choared round, went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & sick Rollen carried Caroline to Wm McNelleys to stay a week.

31st Monday rather fine weather for haying etc I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.

August 1st Tuesday fine weather for haying & harvist I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick etc.

2nd Wednesday rather fine pleasant weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ tiard & about sick.”

22nd Saturday rather a cloudy damp day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8-3/4 & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick Caroline went to Naperville with R Willson & then went up to Sherman Willson & stayed all night.

23rd Sunday rather a cloudy damp disagreeable day & evening & sprinkled some I did my choars was at the office in morning came back & fixed my pen choared round & was at house all day & went to bed about 9 nearly sick Wm McNelly & wife came about noon & left about 4.

24th Monday cloudy bad hay weather I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick.

25th Tuesday rather cloudy damp weather bad for haying I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely and about sick.

26th Wednesday rather bad hay weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.”

14th Friday rather a fine day but some cloudy I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & tiard.

15th Saturday a cloudy damp day & rained some conciderable I did my chaors was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & sick.

16th Sunday rather a fine day but windey & muddy I did my choars was at the office ________________ went to W Joneses & got a horse & buggy & went to McNellys & carried Caroline & went down to Wm McNelly came home got here at ½ past 7 went to bed at 9 Cal stopped at Willsons. [in margin] I carried Caroline Wray to fathers today & back to Willsons.

17th Monday rather a fine day but some cloudy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ sick Caroline stayed at Russeguies.

18th Tuesday rather a fine day & evening I did my choars I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick Caroline Wray came to my house to stay.

19th Wednesday rather a cloudy rainey day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ nearly sick.”

6th Thursday fine hot weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely.

7th Friday A fine hot day some cloudy & a shower about 5 PM & more showeres in afternoon & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick, lonely & downspirited, Mrs Willson & Caroline Wray were at Russeguies a visitating  Cal came to the store & paid me some money & said some things unexpected & wrong [in margin] Cal Wray was at Russeg. H Balis wife had a son weighing only 200/66 pound.

8th Saturday rather a damp lowerey day more pleasant in evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 9 & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & about sick felt rather bad all day.

9th Sunday A damp lowerey with a pretty heavey shower about 11 dull afternoon I did my choars was at the house the most of the day went to the office about 9 & back choared round & went to bed at 9 nearly sick & down hearted [in margin] cow went to bull.

10th Monday rather fine growing weather but wet I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 9 & went to bed soon after tiard & nearly sick.

11th Tuesday rather fine growing weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

12th Wednesday fine growing weather I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.”

29th Thursday fine weather but some showerey I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & sick [in margin] Donation for Hanna Mair put to horse.

30th Friday fine weather but some showers a heavey shower dureing the night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ Methodist had a donation from Hanna.

July 1st Saturday A fine day but cool I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 9 went to bed about 10 nearly sick, Sim Billings mooved into Dan Aherns house [in margin] S Billings mooved in to D Aherns A Bostwick L Waterman were married.

2nd Sunday A fine cool pleasant day some cloudy in morning I did my choars was at the office came home & choared round the most of the day howing in gardin etc went to bed about 9 nearly sick, Elder Marston preached to the Soldiers today.

3rd Monday rather fine weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely.

4th Tuesday a fine still hot day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 9 & went to bed about 10 tiard & nearly sick a lonely day for me & verry still in town, William McNelly & wife & Caroline Wray were at Goulds & Naperville at the fourth, S. Willson & wife & Rollen were at Naperville.

5th Wednesday rather fine weather for the summer I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.”

25th Sunday A cloudy damp misty morning & forenoon, more pleasant in afternoon I did my choars went to office about 8, R Pollard cut my hair I came back & was round the house the most of the day a choaring did my choars at night & went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

26th Monday rather fine weather but wet I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

27th Tuesday fine growing weather with showers about every day or night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9.

18th Sunday rather a fine day but some cloudy & verry windy with quite a shower about 11, I did my choars was went to the office in morning came back & hoed some in the garden etc Roll Willson & Caroline Wray came down here about 10 & stayed till noon & then went back and went to Jack Butterfields a visating.

19th Monday rather a fine day & fine growing weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick— [in margin] Caroline from Willsons home.
