Hiram E. Leonard Diary, April 29 – May 5, 1863

29th Wednesday  fine spring weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick. Caroline got home from Goulds __________.

30th Thursday  fine warm Spring weather, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick Elizabeth went to Griffith all night.

May 1st Friday  fine warm weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick. Elizabeth went to Aurora with Griffeth & stayed all night at Griffeth.

2nd Saturday  a fine warm day & night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ by Hoyts & got home a little before 9 went to bed 9 ½, Elib got here this forenoon.

3rd Sunday  A fine pleasant day but some cloudy. I did my choars was at the house today & evening called at Hoyts in evening came home about 9 & went to bed, I called at S. B. Austins in forenoon & Pat Menters, trimed some trees set out some sprouts etc.

4th Monday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick.

5th Tuesday  rather a cloudy cool morning &snowed thick & fast in the middle & after part of the day, a cold evening & froze dureing the night, I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed tiard & sick about 10.”

22nd Wednesday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 –.

23rd Thursday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about—H S Potter started back to the Army Lieut Peasly got home from the Army.

24th Friday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9. Capt A.C. Graves got home from Galatin.

25th Saturday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9–tiard & nearly sick. Heifer calved.

26th Sunday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at home all day a choaring round & set out willow etc a part of the day, Frank was here, Potter & Deckert had cider was at store & Hoyts in evening came here 8 ½ & went to bed at 9.

27th Monday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick.

28th Tuesday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed a little after 9 nearly sick rained some.”

15th Tuesday rather fine cloudy backward weather & bad road, I did my choars, was at the store all day & evening came home about 8 ½ by Hoyts & went to bed about 10 nearly sick.

16th Wednesday rather a fine day but cloudy & disagreeable.  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ by Hoyts & went to bed about 10 nearly sick.  Dr. W. Wellman got home from Michigan today in stage about 4.  Elizabeth Potter went & commenced work again at Boarding house at night.

17th Thursday  rather cloudy damp disagreeable weather.  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 by Hoyts & Wrays & went to bed about 10 sick & worne out with trouble.

18th Friday  rather a cloudy damp day misty.  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home by Hoyts about 8 & went to bed on loung as usual about 10 sick.

19th Saturday  rather a fine cool windy day with some clouds.  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home by Hoyts & Wrays about 8 ½ & went to bed about ½ about 9 nearly sick.

20th Sunday  rather a cool cloudy day with conciderable air a stiring, I did my choars went to Blisses about 9, then went to the office came up to Hoyts & Wrays, went back to office then came to Hoyts & came home wrote some & choared round the rest of the day called at Hoyts & Wrays in evening came home about 8 & went to bed before 10 tiard and about sick on the lounge as usual.

21st Monday  rather a stormy day & some flakes of snow or snow squalls.  I did my choars was at the store all day & in evening came home about 8 by Hoyts & got home near 9, went to bed about 10 nearly sick.”

8th Wednesday  rather fine but cool for April. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ & rested pretty well. Caroline at home–.

9th Thursday  rather fine for April but rather cool. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ rested well—H S Potter got home from Army.

10th Friday  rather fine weather & quite warm & thundered lightoned. I did my choars was at the store all day & in the came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ amost sick–.

11th Saturday  rather more fine but grew cool towards night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening & looked over with Col some came home 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ & rested well–.

12th Sunday  Some cloudy in the morning but a fine pleasant day with a cool air. I did my choars was at home till 10 then went to the office & looked over with Warren till near one, when I came home by Hoyts & choard round the rest of the day called at Hoyts in evening came home at 9 & went to bed. Caroline Eliza & John came about 12 ½ & John & Eliza went home at about 4. Rollen Willson got home about 5 this morning. [in margin] Negro had a baby.

13th Monday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick with a cold.

14th Tuesday  rather fine for April but cool & dry. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

Second Sundays at the Museum: April 2013

Stop in the Warrenville Historical Museum & Art Gallery on the Second Sunday of each month to see and contribute to a special historical display.  The public is invited to bring in their own items to be displayed alongside the Museum’s collection pieces; items will also be accepted for donations into the collection or copied to be preserved in Warrenville’s history with the owner’s permission.

On Sunday, April 14th, the Museum will display information about our St. Irene Catholic School which is celebrating its 60th Anniversary this month.  Stop in to see the display and bring in any memorabilia or items you have relating to the school!  St. Irene is still looking for photographs from the 1970s for their celebration, please contact us at info@warrenvillehistorical.org if you would like to share any.  Items displayed at the Museum will be out through May 5th. The Historical Museum & Art Gallery is open on Sundays from 1:00-4:00p.m.

Hiram E. Leonard Diary, April 1 – 7, 1863

April 1st Wednesday  rather a fine day but some windy. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed before 10 [in margin] Union meeting.

2nd Thursday  rather a raw windy day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ [in margin] K Vallett got home.

3rd Friday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick, Dr. Wellman went to Aurora & back, H. B. Fowler went to Naperville & made out the writing to sell his farm.

4th Saturday  A most beautiful summer like day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 9 by Hoyts & went to bed about 10 nearly sick. David & Hot came out & stayed all night, they went out & did not get home till about 11.

5th Sunday  A beautiful morning & day but some cloudy in afternoon, I did my choars went to office 3 times in forenoon, went last time at 11 & stayed till 5 making quarterly returns & looking over with Col Warren came home about 5 wrote some & went to office ½ past 5 came back did my choars went to office again, came home & went to bed about 9, Caroline went home with David & Hot about 10, Elizabeth went up to Levensus with I Kenyon & wife about 9 to see her boy, they went to McFerrens & got back at about 5 [in margin] Caroline went home to stay awhile.

6th Monday  rather a fine day & evening, I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ –nearly sick Dr. Wellman started for Michigan.
