Hiram E. Leonard Diary, February 11-17, 1869

11th Thursday  fine warm weather & muddy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out, Mrs Stone came back at supper time.

12th Friday  A cloudy muddy warm day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

13th Saturday  I did my choars it was a cloudy forenoon & a rainey afternoon & evening  I was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Mrs Stone went to D Kenyons & stayed after night.

14th Sunday  A warm cloudy foggy morning & broake away some in middle & after part of the day  I did my choars went to the office came home & eat breckfust choared round the house wrote some & went to the office in the evening came home & went to bed at 9 nearly sick & worne out.

15th Monday  fine winter weather for Feb  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

16th Tuesday  fine weather but muddy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

17th Wednesday  the weather is mild & roads muddy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.”

17th Thursday  a fine winter day good sleighing  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick.

18th Friday  A fine day for winter good sleighing but thawed conciderable  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  Resseguies & Rogers drew wood for me 4 loads each Jerry Dady chopped.

19th Saturday  A fine warm day & thawed fast spoild the sleighing  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out  Mrs Stone came here from Pelhams & stayed overnight  windy night.

20th Sunday  A windy raw day wind blew hard  I did my choars was at the house all day a choaring round the house, went to the store in the evening came back after calling at Kenyons & went to bed at 9 sick Mrs Stone & Tom Pelham eat supper here & then went home, Reseguie brought the trunk home after he took the buck boar tonight or tomorrow morning at 5 or 6 oclock  [in margin]  William Lamb took the buck  The Wheaton folks got the Recorders about 150 went down after them.

21st Monday  rather a fine cool day grew cold all day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble, Rolen Willson went to Wheaton with L V Resseguie to start in the evening for Shirms Willsons in Iowa, at 10 tonight [in margin] Rollen Willson started for Iowa to Sherm Willsons the Wheaton folks got the recorders books this morning.

22nd Tuesday  A cold pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

23rd Wednesday  fine cold weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.”

12th Saturday  A fine winter day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out  Jerry & Resseguie killed a heffer for me & McGee came and stayed at Perry over Sunday.

13th Sunday  A fine winter day & spit snow the most of the day  I did my choars was at the house a choaring round went to the office about noon & called at Kenyons was at office in evening came home & went to bed at 9.

14th Monday  fine winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

15th Tuesday a fine winter day & good sleighing  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  Resseguies & Rogers cut & drew wood for me & Jerry Dady chopped for me in woods.

16th Wednesday  fine sleighing & winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  Resseguies & Rogers drew wood for me all day from wood 4 loads each.”

26th Thursday  A fine pleasant day & night  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out thanksgiven day we had a chicken for dinner & oysters for supper  Kenyon had John Billings & Sim Billings & their ladies to supper & 3 cans of oysters.

27th Friday  A fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

28th Saturday A fine pleasant day & night  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ or got ready when R B Pollard came to have me go to the office for a letter & he stayed till 11, when I came home & went bed & they to _________.

29th Sunday  A fine day with a cool south wind  I did my choars was at the house the most of the day, went to the store & sold 2 suits clothes choared round the house wrote some & went to the office again in the evening came home & went to bed about 9 nearly sick, Caroline & Eliza went to the concert at Baptist house.

30th Monday  fine weather for Nov  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out [in margin] Mrs Stone left Kenyons.

December 1st Tuesday  fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out [in margin] Mrs Stone came at night.

3rd Thursday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Miller at Winfield brought down Barber & Hall came for company & was at the saloon, Barber & Hall went somewhere & Miller got tiard of wating & started to find them, old Mrs McFerren came today.

4th Friday  A fine day for Sept. I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out with trouble Kenyon & Jose Hellm went to Naperville & came round by B Bartholomews to see Mrs McFerrin.

5th Saturday  rather a cloudy day & rained about five oclock & dureing the night  I did my choars was at the office all day came home & 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble of Sister  Kenyon discharged Miss Helm & she went to Naperville & stayed at J Pomeroys, J Billings was there & left & met Barber Barber went & stayed a while.

6th Sunday  A cloudy damp disagreeable morning and day  I did my choars went to office came back & choared round the house, Saw John Billings was at the office in the evening came home & went to bed about 9, J Billings went to Geneva.

7th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my chaors was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly worne out with Sister Joseph Helm went to Chicago.

8th Tuesday  cloudy & rained a part of the day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly worne out with trouble & Sister, Mrs Stone commenced to D Kenyons tonight.

27th Thursday  A fine hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Crosier thrashed on mine they had 576 bushels of oats & 13 ½ bush wheat.

28th Friday  A fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 10 tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble & sister  George McCauley from lotts creek came here at 11 & stayed all night, he wanted Eliza McNelly to go back with him Kenyon went to Aurora & got a revolver [in margin] Caroline sick.

29th Saturday  A fine day but sprinkled a little in the forenoon & was clouds  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly worne out with Sister, Mc Cauley started about 12 to go back to Iowa without Eliza but she wanted to go  Mooved to Aurora  [in margin] Caroline sick  McCuly started __________.

30th Sunday  A fine day but rather cloudy  I did my choars was round the house the most of the day went to store forenoon & evening came home & went to bed about 9, Rol Willson went to Naperville  Mrs Stone came here.

31st Monday  rather fine weather  I did my chaors was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with Sister.

September 1st Tuesday  rather a fine day for Sept  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with Sister  Daniel Kenyon set up all night & had 2 revolvers A wagon passed by & hitched at my store & three men came part way up the hill, one came up oposit Kenyons, the other two could not be seen, some one rattled the bedroom window Jose Helm sprang to the window & Kenyon with his revolver at the same time, soon after there was a quear smell which spread all over the house & came pretty near putting Kenyon to sleep he had to rais the window in the butry he looked bad, the house was clear of smell in 3 or 4 hours [in margin] Daniel Kenyon set up all night with a revolver in hand.

2nd Wednesday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister.”

5th Friday  rained some in forenoon cleared off in afternoon more pleasant  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with sister, Mrs Bliss got home from Association [in margin] George pretty tite on cider.

6th Saturday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

7th Sunday  A fine warm pleasant day  I did my choars was round the house all day a choaring went to the office in the evening came home & went to bed at 9 nearly sick  Rol Willson & Matta Gould called here a while & went home [in margin] Jo Ferry & wife were at D Kenyons.

8th Monday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the store all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out [in margin] Mrs Miner preached.

9th Tuesday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Caroline Willson & Eliza McNelly came from their father’s in Iowa last week & got here this morning  before 9, 10.

10th Wednesday  fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble.”

2nd Thursday  fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with trouble  Sim Billings got whipped at the tavern [in margin] A Ball at Perry & Sim Billings got whipped.

3rd Friday  fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  William Jorden was buried this afternoon he bled to death at the lungs.

4th Saturday  A snowey morning & forenoon it began to snow about 4 oclock in the morning snowed pretty fast the most of the forenoon fell three or four inches a pretty cold night  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble, Daniel Kenyon deeded his farm to S.B. Hill today.

5th Sunday  A fine cool morning & day with the ground covered with snow  The thurmometer at about 12 degrees above zero pretty cool  I did my choars went to the office came home & choared round the house the most of the day, went to the office made up the mail came home & went to bed at about 9 nearly sick  Mrs Stone went to C Owens about 10.

6th Monday  A cool disagreeable day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

7th Tuesday  rather cold rough weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly and worne out with trouble & Sisters actions.

14th Saturday  a fine pleasant warm day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

15th Sunday  A fine warm pleasant beautiful day  I did my choars went to the office & back choared round the house went to office at noon came back was at the office in the evening came back & went to bed at about 9 nearly sick [in margin] Joseph Helm came to D Kenyons today.

16th Monday  A cloudy day with thunder showers  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out [in margin[ S Willson deded his farm to Crist Burmmel.

17th Tuesday  A cloudy damp day & grew colder  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

18th Wednesday  rather a fine day but cool & frozen in morning  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & sick.”

5th Thursday  A rainey nasty day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out with trouble.

6th Friday  A rainey muddy nasty day the snow a going off fast  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick it rained verry hard the most of the night & the river raised fast, the water backed up the drane in to my celler over 2 feet, D Kenyon had a sick turn tonight & got the doctor.

7th Saturday  rained some in forenoon & grew cooler & cleared off in afternoon, the river verry high but fell towards night  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & dishartened  cow calved.

8th Sunday  A fine day & pleasant ground frozen in the morning but thawed out  I did my choars was at the house all day after going to office & back, choared round & took care of sister went to office in evening came back went to bed about 9 sick & worne out with trouble Mrs Stone & Nelson went to Raynoldses & stayed all night  Mrs Jorden came about 10.

9th Monday  a fine day for March  I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ and went to bed 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold etc.

10th Tuesday  fine weather but some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold & worne out with trouble.
