30th Monday  rather a fine day & evening I did my choars eat & Wrays & was at the office all day a making out the P.O. Returns went home by Wrays about 9 & went to bed 10.”

29th Sunday  it showered some but was rather fine.  I did my choars eat at Wrays was at the office the most of the day a making out the Post Office Returns, was at Hoyts & Wrays in evening came home about 9 & went to bed about 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold & worn out.”

28th Saturday  Some damp in morning but a pretty fine day I eat breckfust at Bridges & went down town between 7 & 8 & started in the cars for home between 9 & 10, got home about 12 came in the stage eat dinner at Bliss & supper at Wrays lodged at house & went to bed between 9 & 10 sick.”

Hiram E. Leonard Diary, June 27, 1862

27th Friday  A fine pleasant morning & day till near night when we had a heavey shower when near Wilmington.  I left Springfield on the cars a little before 12 at noon & got into Chicago about ½ past 8 it was sprinkling some.  I went up to Bridges & stayed all night got there a little after 9.”

26th Thursday  A rainey disagreeable forenoon at Jacksonville.  I started between 11 & 12 for the Insane hospital with Sister Young Sister Fox carried us up got there a little before noon & left her & I went back & got dinner & went up again about 3 oclock PM and went all over the Institute & round the barns etc.  Saw Sister again & felt verry bad to leave her.  She was so frustrated & she felt so bad to have me leave, I started the village about ½ past 6, went up & saw the deef & dumb asylum & took the cars for Springfield between 10 & 11 & got to Springfield about 12, went to a tavern & stayed till next day about 8 or 9 went to Depot Friday & took cars for Chicago 50 after 11.”

25th Wednesday  A rainey disagreeable morning & forenoon more pleasant in afternoon we arrived at St Louis railroad Junction a little after 6 & stayed till 6 in afternoon when we took cars for Jacksonville & got there about ½ past 7 went the Mansion House & stayed all night _______  Fox I rested tolerable well it rained during night.”

24th Tuesday  rather a fine day & evening & cool.  I did my choars got ready to go to Jacksonville with Sister & Griffeth & I started with her a little before 10 & got to Joliett about 20 minutes past 3 P.M.  we got dinner & Griffeth started for home about 5 I stayed till near 11 when we went & took the cars for Springfield began to rain during the night.”

23rd Monday  rather a fine day but cool for June.  I did my choars was round home all day & evening a getting ready to go to Jacksonville called at Hoyts etc came home between 8 & 9 & went to bed about 10.”

22nd Sunday  A cloudy damp day with showers.  I did my choars & breckfust choars wrote some & was at home the most of the day called at Bliss Hoyts Wrays and other places went to bed between 9 & 10 nearly sick looked up Sisters things & packed some of them to go to Jacksonville.”

21st Saturday A cloudy damp day & rained in forenoon & broak away at noon I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home by Hoyts & Wrays between 8 & 9 got home about 9 & went to bed at 10 tiard & nearly sick.  Mrs. Culver stayed in evening got word from Jacksonville.”
