30th Monday rather a fine day for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about noon & soon went to bed McNelly boys went home H. McNelly went with Pinky to St. Charles Warren went to Chicago.”

29th Sunday A cool cloudy damp day & mist more or less all day & evening I got up about 6, did my choars went to the office after breckfust & 3 times more after that Wm & David McNelly came out & Eliza with them, I was at Wrays & Hoyts in evening came home about 9 & soon went to bed David came & stayed with me.”

28th Saturday rather a fine day & evening some cloudy I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came home a little after 8 called at Wrays he had just got home from Kankakee with two old horses that he took on a debt an could get nothing else. I came home between 9 & 10 & went to bed about sick. Pinkey Pollard was there at Wrays.”

22nd Sunday A cool pleasant day & evening with conciderable air I did my choars eat breckfust, went to the office came back choared round got my cider into the cellar & drew some off & filled the other barrel, wated on Sister wrote & read some was at home the most of the day, called at Hoyts & Wrays in evening came home & went to bed between 8 & 9 nearly sick.”

Hiram E. Leonard Diary, September 21, 1861

21st Saturday A cold but rather pleasant day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home a little before 9 & soon went to bed tiard & sick. Wm Wray went with Jerry F Pollard to Sargents & made some cider for Pollard & me. I had about 54 gals out of 20 bushels of apples & Jerry made 50 gals out of 15 bushels, Sargent charged 12/ for the mill to make the whole of the cider. Mrs. Denham called”
