Hiram E. Leonard Diary, June 12 – 18, 1867

12th Wednesday  fine weather for corn & grain  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worn out with sister.

13th Thursday  fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 9 ½ & went to to bed at 10 nearly sick & worne out  The sherriff served the papers on the Supervisors to stop the county seet proceeding [in margin] Franck grave me a plowing.

14th Friday  fine hot growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worned out with sister She worrys so much.

15th Saturday  A fine hot growing day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home a little after 9 & went to bed about 10 sick & worne out with sister, Mrs Stone went to Doc Waterman & I fastened up the house except the north door, She came & found the back door fastened & did not come to the north door, & supposed I had fastened all the doors & she went to Barkers & stayed all night.

16th Sunday  A fine warm pleasant day & a getting dry  I did my choars went to the office about 8 & came back choared round the house, fixed my paster fence some wrote some, took a nap etc I went to bed about 9 nearly sick  Sister is verry troublesome.

17th Monday  fine pleasant dry weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worn out with sister.

18th Tuesday a fine pleasant day things grow  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10, nearly sick & worne out.”

“29th Wednesday  rather cool cloudy damp weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard & about worn out with sister, Ned Murry spoke at the Junction [in margin] Caroline was taken sick.

30th Thursday  A cold cloudy day  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard & worn out with Sister.

31st Friday  rather a fine pleasant day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 sick with a cold & worn out with sister, the Wheaton people had a county seat meeting at the Meth church Col Sweet, Vallett & others spoke.

June 1st Saturday  A cloudy damp day with several showers  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worne out  H H Cody spoke at the Methodist Church this evening & had quite an audiance & spoke well.

2nd Sunday A cloudy windy day & a growing cold  I did my choars was at the office after breckfust came back choared round fixed calf paster etc, went down at 2 with Willa Carpenter to office was at home the most of the day went to bed at 9  Mrs Stone went over the river, George went to Willsons.

3rd Monday  A fine cool day  I did my chaors was at home till after 3, when I went to Garys Mill to an election to remoove the county seat to Wheaton, came back & went to bed about 10 nearly sick with a cold there was a 117 vote to remoove to Wheaton.

4th Tuesday  A fine warm day & evening  I did my chaors was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick with a cold.”

27th Thursday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  George left & went to Willsons today or tomorrow.

28th Friday  rather a fine cool day  I did my chaors was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  George left & went to Willsons & stayed tonight & Mrs Stone Storm was here.

29th Saturday   pretty fine cold day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick  J K Pollard came out last night went back.

30th Sunday  rather a cold day the coldest morning we have yet had Mercury 8 degrees below zero a verry cloudy evening but more mild  I did my choars was at the house all day & evening called at the office at noon & night sold 3 cans of oysters, choared round the howel & fixed it some went to bed at about 9, tiard & sick [in margin] Jesse Wheaton & Sarah M. Brown were married.

31st Monday  rather a fine cloudy day  I did my chaors was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.

1st Tuesday, January 1867  rather a fine pleasant day & evening but cool  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick with a cold  Mrs Stone made a New Years, & had the Willsons & Perrys people & Cowens to dinner they had a fine time.”

7th Sunday  a cloudy smokey morning  but a fine hot day  I did my choars walked down to H Goulds & part way back  I went to Naperville & got measured for some cloth came home got here before sunset Gould me & Derry boy up to the mill & Aden Dery went down soon after I got there  I went to bed about 9 tiard & about sick.

8th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick [in margin] G Sidwell left for Rockford.

9th Tuesday  fine weather for Oct  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick Fair com at Wheaton.”

26th Thursday A cloudy disagreeable day & night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely as death.

27th Friday A cloudy misty disagreeable day & snowed several inches during the night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick dishartened and about discouraged.

28th Saturday Several inches of snow on the ground & a snowing looks conciderable like winter brooke away in forenoon a cold night & froze quite hard, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & sick.

29th Sunday A cold but more pleasant morning and day but froze quite hard last night I did my choars eat breckfust went to the office & back choared round the house picked some apples etc took my cold off to wean etc, a good deal like winter I went to bed about 8 ½ nearly sick dishartened & a lonely as one can be & about discouraged [in margin] a cold winterlike day.

30th Monday A cold cloudy disagreeable day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 & went to bed about 9 lonely & sick [in margin] Bostwick moved to Wheaton.

31st Tuesday A cold cloudy disagreeable day & night seemed like winter I did my choars was at office all day & evening & came home 8 bed 9.

22nd Friday  rather a fine hot day some cloudy, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely as death.

23rd Saturday  A hot disagreeable day & some cloudy, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick [in margin] Tom Pelham first child was born this Saturday night.

24th Sunday  A cloudy damp morning & showrey forenoon & hot, more pleasant & cool in afternoon  I did my choars went to the store & back, got Bliss horse & wagon & started with Caroline for her fathers about 9 but it rained before we got to S Willsons & we stoped & stayed till 11 & came back, I choared round wrote some etc did my choars & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick & lonely as death.

25th Monday  rather a fine warm day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

26th Tuesday  rather fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 lonely as death & sick.

27th Wednesday  rather a fine cloudy hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 11 sick & lonely as death & all but dead, Roll Willson came from Coral had a letter sent from Wheaton about Caroline & me which caused hard feeling all round & Caroline packed up her things to leave tomorrow, Rol hurt Shermans mair [in margin] Rol Willson came from Coral & hirt Shermans mair Caroline left for good.”

31st Thursday fine weather for haying but hot I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick [in margin] R here Rollen Wilson & Caroline went to Naperville.

September 1st Friday A fine day & evening but hot, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

2nd Saturday A fine day & evening but hot I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick, Rolen Willson went to Naperville & carried Caroline Wray, in morning & got home about 11.

3rd Sunday A fine hot day with some cloudy, I did my choars was at home the most of the day & evening, went to office after breckfust & back, I choared round the house & went to bed about 9, tiard lonely & about sick Rol Willson & Caroline Wray went a riding, Said they were going to the Junction to a Camp Meeting, they started about 2, & got home about ½ past 9 in evening found no camp meeting but went to Turner & round by Wheaton home.

4th Monday rather fine weather for the season but verry hot I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick [in margin] State Fair in Chicago.

5th Tuesday rather a fine day but hot & some cloudy ground very wet I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

6th Wednesday cloudy damp weather & disagreeable for the State Fair I did my choars was at the office all day. Shut up & went to supper I came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ sick & lonely.”

25th Saturday A cold cloudy morning & a cold rainey day & evening from the North East & froze to the trees a hard storm & the river high I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick G O Potter went to Naperville in the rain & got home a little after 5 pretty muddy & some tiard.

26th Sunday A cloudy damp muddy disagreeable day I did my choars was at the house all day after going to the office about 10 choared round till about 6. Went to office & made up the mail came home about 7 wrote some & went to bed about 9, nearly sick.

27th Monday rather fine weather for Feb I did my choars was at the office the most of the day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold, lonely.

26th Saturday  A fine day & more warm but dry, I did my choars was at the store all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick, I traded with peddler over $50.

27th Sunday  A fine warm pleasant day & evening. I did my choars was at store & Hoyts after breckfust came home titoned up 2 bedsteds picked peaches fixed apple bins & picked up some winter apples & called at Hoyts in evening came home at 8 went to bed at 9.”
