Hiram E. Leonard Diary, December 17 – 23, 1868

17th Thursday  a fine winter day good sleighing  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick.

18th Friday  A fine day for winter good sleighing but thawed conciderable  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  Resseguies & Rogers drew wood for me 4 loads each Jerry Dady chopped.

19th Saturday  A fine warm day & thawed fast spoild the sleighing  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out  Mrs Stone came here from Pelhams & stayed overnight  windy night.

20th Sunday  A windy raw day wind blew hard  I did my choars was at the house all day a choaring round the house, went to the store in the evening came back after calling at Kenyons & went to bed at 9 sick Mrs Stone & Tom Pelham eat supper here & then went home, Reseguie brought the trunk home after he took the buck boar tonight or tomorrow morning at 5 or 6 oclock  [in margin]  William Lamb took the buck  The Wheaton folks got the Recorders about 150 went down after them.

21st Monday  rather a fine cool day grew cold all day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble, Rolen Willson went to Wheaton with L V Resseguie to start in the evening for Shirms Willsons in Iowa, at 10 tonight [in margin] Rollen Willson started for Iowa to Sherm Willsons the Wheaton folks got the recorders books this morning.

22nd Tuesday  A cold pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

23rd Wednesday  fine cold weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.”

19th Saturday  rather rainey damp weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble & Sister  Grant & Herick had a squabble today at my store & Grant hurt Herricks nose & made it bleed [in margin] Rol Willson got back.

20th Sunday  rather a cloudy damp day  I did my choars was at the office came back & choared round the house & wrote some was at the office in the evening came home & went to bed at 9, about sick, Car & Eliza went beyond Finlys to get Peneroial came back about one & Mrs Stone had just come, R B Pollard was here in morning for a girle.

21st Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  Court set at Naperville.

22nd Tuesday  fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out, lots went as Jurors  Salsbery poisoned at Wheaton.

23rd Wednesday  Some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went at 9 ½ sick & worne out, with trouble Daniel Salsbery was poisoned at Platts at Wheaton last night.”

20th Saturday  A cold cloudy disagreeable day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Rol Willson came here & stayed all night  Cals goslins sliped away about sunset & we could not find them [in margin] goslins ran away.

21st Sunday  A cold cloudy damp day  I did my choars was at the house all day came home about 9 and went to bed about 10 sick  Rol Willson was here till noon Caroline went to Naperville with Rol in afternoon.

22nd Monday  rather fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble & Sister.

23rd Tuesday  fine weather & a growing time  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick from trouble with Sister etc.

14th Sunday  A fine hot day & looked like showers  I did my choars was at the house all day choaring was at store at noon & evening went to bed at 9 Gould & wife came here & took supper, Abe Stone & Miss Rogers likewise.

15th Monday  rather a damp lowerey morning but more pleasant in afternoon  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out, Caroline & Elizabeth came back from Babcock Grove & her sisters & Mrs Stone went to Ada Bostwicks.

16th Tuesday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister [in margin] Caroline commenced.

7th Sunday  A fine warm pleasant day  I did my choars was round the house all day a choaring went to the office in the evening came home & went to bed at 9 nearly sick  Rol Willson & Matta Gould called here a while & went home [in margin] Jo Ferry & wife were at D Kenyons.

30th Saturday  A fine growing day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble with Sister.

31st Sunday  A fine warme cloudy growing day looks like showers  I did my choars was at the house a choaring round the most of the time, Mooved the milk ______ down celler etc was at the office 3 times came back & went to bed at 9  Rol Willson & Motta Gould were here to supper & Rolen paid me 40 dollars on note.

June 1st Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

2nd Tuesday  rather fine but cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & tiard  Mrs Bliss & Mrs Fowler went to Aurora to the Baptist Assosiation.

3rd Wednesday  Some showerey  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick [in margin] Perry came home with the navy owed.”

21st Saturday  A fine pleasant day but frozen in the morning  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick and worne out with Sister, I got a letter from Caroline today & Rol Willson got a letter from his wife which made him feel rather bad, but he left with me to send to her twenty five dollars, & settled with me & gave his notes.

22nd Sunday  A fine pleasant day but water was frozen quite hard in the morning, I did my choars eat breckfust went to the office & back choared round wrote some & took care of Sister etc went to office in evening came back & went to bed about 9 nearly sick & worne out with Sister, Mrs Stone went over the river to Bostwicks.

23rd Monday  A fine pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

24th Tuesday  A fine day for March  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick with a cold  Denne cut wood.

25th Wednesday  A fine rainey day & cool  I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.”

11th Wednesday  a cloudy misty morning & day & snowed some in afternoon & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  The Jerrys Pollard & Dady killed my hogs one weighed 357 the 360#.

12th Thursday  A fine day for winter  I did my choars was at the office all day came home before 8 cut up my hogs & went to bed about 11 or after nearly sick and worne out with trouble.

13th Friday  fine winter weather & cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & salted some pork & went to bed at 10 ½.

14th Saturday  A cloudy winter day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 & finished salting my pork & went to bed at about 10 tiard & nearly sick with trouble, Sister is verry worrysome [in margin] Fairbanks had his leg operated on.

15th Sunday  cloudy & snowed a little not verry cold  I did my choars was at the house the most of the day a choaring round went to the office 3 times, was at home in evening wrote some & went to bed about 9 nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Mrs Stone went to meeting at 10 ½ & in the evening H Gould & family were here at supper & Elizer Stone, Rol Willson called.

16th Monday  fine winter weather with a  little snow  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 & went to bed at  9 ½.

3rd Sunday  A cloudy & verry windy day with thunder & rain at Naperville, the wind all most blew the tops of my stacks off  I did my choars was at the home all day a choaring round the house, Roll Caroline & Mrs Stone went to H Goulds & got wet, they got home between 4 & 5  I went to bed at 9, the wind split my window blind at store & left them loos last night.

4th Monday  rather fine for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

5th Tuesday  a fine day for election  I did my choars was at the office till one came home eat dinner & went to election to Garys Mill came back to the store, Daniel Gross was elected treasurer, I came home at 9 & went to bed at 10 sick.”
