Hiram E. Leonard Diary, April 17 – 23, 1867

17th Wednesday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick.

18th Thursday  fine weather for April  I did my choars was at the office all day, came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard lonely & nearly sick [in margin] Milt Piney came.

19th Friday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard lonely & sick  Barber mooved into Pelhams house.

20th Saturday  A fine day with a heavey wind & cool.  I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 or 10 ½ nearly sick, had to go to the office with Rod Smith for Med for his father about 10, Mrs Stone came here in the evening to stay a while.

21st Sunday  A damp cloudy morning & began to rain at noon quite fast was a wet afternoon  I did my choars was at office about 10 choared round the house the rest of the day corded up the bed etc was at office in evening came home & went to bed about 10 nearly sick.

22nd Monday  rather fine cool weather for April  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick with a cold.

23rd Tuesday  rather cold weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold.”

20th Wednesday  A fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.

21st Thursday  A cold morning all but a frost  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick [in margin] Pelham took John Goland to Jacksonville.

22nd Friday  rather fine cool dry weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick [in margin] Rol & Cal went to Naperville & Goulds.

23rd Saturday  A fine warm day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & about sick.

24th Sunday A fine hot pleasant day with conciderable air verry dry I did my choars was at home a choaring round the most of the day went to store for Bet Billings at one oclock came back wrote some & took a nap, went to bed about 9 tiard & about sick.

25th Monday  rather fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick [in margin] Masons met at Elgin for to selabrate at Johns day.

26th Tuesday  fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.”

9th Wednesday  pretty fine but cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.

10th Thursday  fine weather for May but cool & dry  I did my choars, was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick [in margin] Rol and Caroline went to her fathers.

11th Friday  fine weather but cool & dry  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick with a cold.

12th Saturday  rather a fine day with some showers  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home a little before 9 & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick [in margin] Rol & Cal cleaned house at the Pelham house.

13th Sunday  A fine pleasant day with a cool air and grew cold towards night  I did my choars was round home the most of the day a choaring round, & planted some corn & potatoes was at the office in the morning, at noon & in the evening came back & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & about sick, Carpenter & Charles Estes called here about 2 oclock Charles & his wife were on their way back to see his father in Massachusetts Caroline & Rol were a cleaning house today.

14th Monday rather a fine cool day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  David McNelly went back to.

15th Tuesday  rather a cool day & night  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick [in margin] R Willson & Caroline mooved into Pelhams house.”

27th Thursday Some squalls of rain I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.

28th Friday rather cloudy & some misty I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick & homesick.

29th Saturday rather a fine but cool & mist a little in the evening I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 9 & went to bed about 10 tiard lonely and about sick felt low spirited I received a letter from George Potter requesting me to send him some Jerry Pollard potato [in margin] Jerry Roberts sawed wood.

30th Sunday A misty damp showery day & evening I did my choars went to the office twice & in evening to make up the mail was round the most of the day a choaring round grafted some etc came home from office at 8 & went to bed lonely & sick, H. Gould & family went to Cal Wrays and he called when he went back for me to go to store & get tobacco about 2 oclock.

May 1st Monday rather a fine day for may for cool I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick President Abraham Lincoln corpse arrived in Chicago & was seen this afternoon & tomorrow Col J. M. Warren & many others went in from here.

2nd Tuesday rather a fine cool day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick President Lincolns boddy left Chicago for Springfield about 8 in evening Col Warren went down to Spring.

3rd Wednesday rather a cloudy cool day I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ lonely & sick Pelham killed my dog today.”

23rd Thursday fine cool weather for March I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely as death.

24th Friday rather fine weather & a little more mild, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely, lonely.

25th Saturday A fine pleasant day with a cool air, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home called at John Pomeroys about 8 ½ & stayed till after 11 came home & went to bed about 12 sick & lonely as death.

26th Sunday A most beautiful day with some clouds I did my choars was at the office about 10 came back by Bliss & went to choaring round the house, Mr Pelham came, G Sidwell & H Gould came about 11 & went away one I went to the office about sunset & made up the mail came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 nearly sick & lonely as death Geo Potter & his wife went up to Caroline Wrays started about 12 at noon & got back about dark, they walked up.

27th Monday rather fine for the season I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick.

28th Tuesday rather fine weather for the season I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick [in margin] commenced to repair the dam.

29th Wednesday fine for the season I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.”

9th Thursday rather fine cool weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ about sick Lewey Kenyon came & stayed all night.

10th Friday A fine cool day thawed a little I dd my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ nearly sick Mrs. L Kenyon stayed all night.

11th Saturday A fine day with a cold air I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold, Louisa Kenyon went home with Pelham.

12th Sunday A most beautiful day with a cold air I did my choars was at home all day went to the office in evening & made up the mail came home at 7 or before & went to bed about 9 nearly sick with a cold had wrote some & choared round Mrs. Potter & Charley went to meeting [in margin] Mrs Potter & Charles went to meeting twice Caroline Wray went home to her fathers.

13th Monday rather fine weather for winter but some muddy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ went bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.

14th Tuesday rather fine winter weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & found G O Potter got home from the hospital at Memphis with his discharge & his eyes not much better he left Memphis last Saturday.

15th Wednesday rather fine weather, snowed some during the night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.”

“3rd Thursday rather fine weather but some cloudy. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

“4th Friday rather a fine day & a cold night cloudy day & clear night, I did my choars was at the office all day 7 till 6 ½ in evening then went to Methodist church to hear Cody make a political speech went home about ½ past 9 & soon went to bed nearly sick.

“5th Saturday A fine pleasant beautiful day for Nov. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick [in margin] Mrs Stowels husband came home at night.

“6th Sunday rather a fine morning but a cloudy day with squalls of rain a most all day rather a hard day. I did my choars was at the house most of the day choaring round & fixing corn crib, went to office about noon came back wrote some in evening & went to bed about 9 tiard & lonely Charles went to Carolines to got to go to her father but did not go Tom Pelham was married to Mrs Ellin or Hellin York today by Elder Ofield at Downers Grove.

“7th Monday rather a cloudy damp day. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick & lonely [in margin] Caroline went to her fathers.

“8th Tuesday rather a cool cloudy damp & some misty day. I did my choars was at the office till about one oclock when I came up & went to election with Jerry Pollard came back between 3 & 4 went to the store came home eat supper & went back came home 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick it mist a little in evening & rained before morning, A Lincoln got 180 majority over McLellen, McLellen had 58 or 59 a pretty still election.

“23rd Friday fine but some cloudy & rained in afternoon I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

“24th Saturday A cool cloudy damp morning but a fine cold day & night froze. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick. Mrs Potter went to Pelhams & Lanes to stay over night.

“25th Sunday rather a fine cool cloudy day & evening I did my choars was at the house amost all day went to the office after breckfust choared round was about sick went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & sick. Mrs Potter was at Pelhams & Lanes all day, got home at ___.

“26th Monday rather fine weather for the season I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & lonely [in margin] fair at Wheaton commenced.

“27th Tuesday fine weather for the season I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

“28th Wednesday rather fine weather for Sept I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick [in margin] A Wellman came at 2 oclock.”

“30th Thursday rather fine weather for the season, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & lonely.

“July 1st Friday fine warm weather with a light shower, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & lonesome.

“2nd Saturday rather fine weather & cool. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick & lonely & homesick.

“3rd Sunday A fine cool pleasant day & evening a very cool morning. I did my choars was at home all day, went to the office and went up to salt my mair come home & went to bed about 9 lonely & nearly sick. George & Elizabeth & Charles wen to Lewinses started 7 ½ with Waddles horse & wagon & got home in evening. Charles stayed to work but stayed till middle of week.

“12th Thursday rather fine weather for May but cool, I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed 9 ½ about sick & lonely—[in margin] George and wife went to Carolines.

“13th Friday fine cool weather but warm in the middle of the day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ lonely & sick. Caroline went home with Hat to her fathers.

“14th Saturday a pretty fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick with a cold & lonesome. George & wife went to Pelhams & Chandlers, got home in evening.

“15th Sunday A fine pleasant day till afternoon when it was some cloudy & more cool. I did my choars was round the house all day after going to the office in morning. I choared round wrote some etc fixed the fence some round the paster & cleaned out the backhouse etc went to the office & made up the mail come home by Hoyts about 8 & went to bed about 9 nearly sick & lonesome & lonely as death [in margin] Wm J Wray shot at Resaca Georgia in the jugalor vain & died almost instantly in charging Rebel Fortification.

“16th Monday rather fine warm weather & a getting dry. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½, tiard, nearly sick, lonesome & unhappy.

“17th Tuesday A fine warm pleasant day & evening, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick lonesome & Lonely—.

“18th Wednesday pretty hot dry weather for May. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home by Hoyts about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick, discontented & dreary.”
