Hiram E. Leonard Diary, July 31 – August 6, 1867

31st Wednesday  a pretty fine forenoon, but a verry heavey shower in the afternoon with a heavey wind & some hail & blew a tree over on to my howel, I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick with a cold & trouble.

August 1st Thursday  rather a fine day but some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 10 tiard & nearly sick with trouble etc William Briggs came here from Batavia & went back today.

2nd Friday  rather a fine day for haying  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard & nearly sick with trouble  Mrs Stone came back from Carolines she stayed three 4 days, came back in evening.

3rd Saturday  A fine hot hay day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 about sick  I got a letter from Charles that he would start for here a Monday.

4th Sunday  A fine warm day but some cloudy, I did my choars was at the office about 9 came back & cut a tree & got it off from my stable choared round the house fixed my big pen & turned my calf into the paster with the cow & went to office in the evening came home & went to bed at 9.

5th Monday  A fine pleasant hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 10 nearly sick & worn out [in margin] C R Leonard started for here.

6th Tuesday  rather fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly worne out with trouble.”

4th Thursday rather a warm day & cloudy not verry fine for the 4th I did my choars was at the office came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick [in margin] a still Fourth.

5th Friday  rather a cloudy showerey day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 sick & worn out with trouble.

6th Saturday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 10 sick & sorrowful.

7th Sunday  rather a fine cool day with some clouds  I did my choars was at the office about 9, came home choared round the house was about sick & went to bed about 10 & lay till near 2, fixed fence some etc  Sister was verry troublesome, Caroline called & eat supper, Mrs Stone went to C Owens  I did my choars & went to bed about 9 sick.

8th Monday  rather fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worn out.

9th Tuesday  fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worn out [in margin] Patterson & Estes came here.”

“29th Wednesday  rather cool cloudy damp weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard & about worn out with sister, Ned Murry spoke at the Junction [in margin] Caroline was taken sick.

30th Thursday  A cold cloudy day  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard & worn out with Sister.

31st Friday  rather a fine pleasant day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 sick with a cold & worn out with sister, the Wheaton people had a county seat meeting at the Meth church Col Sweet, Vallett & others spoke.

June 1st Saturday  A cloudy damp day with several showers  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worne out  H H Cody spoke at the Methodist Church this evening & had quite an audiance & spoke well.

2nd Sunday A cloudy windy day & a growing cold  I did my choars was at the office after breckfust came back choared round fixed calf paster etc, went down at 2 with Willa Carpenter to office was at home the most of the day went to bed at 9  Mrs Stone went over the river, George went to Willsons.

3rd Monday  A fine cool day  I did my chaors was at home till after 3, when I went to Garys Mill to an election to remoove the county seat to Wheaton, came back & went to bed about 10 nearly sick with a cold there was a 117 vote to remoove to Wheaton.

4th Tuesday  A fine warm day & evening  I did my chaors was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick with a cold.”

31st Wednesday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 sick.

November 1st Thursday  rather fine but cool & some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick, Schovell & wife Fredenhagen & wife, Sim Billings & wife & Caroline Willson went down to Naperville in the stage to a Ball & Caroline came back home with R Pollard.

2nd Friday  rather a fine day but some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home 8 ½ to bed 9 ½ tiard & sick.

3rd Saturday  rather a cloudy disagreeable day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  Henry Rogers was married to Roset Beardsly this afternoon at Turner by Methodist minister.

4th Sunday  A cold cloudy raw day & cleared off in evening  I did my choars & went to Goulds with Bliss horse Wallace went with me got home at sunset went to Salors & got my photograph taken went to store in evening went to bed at 8 ½ sick Roll Cal went to Sher Willsons.

5th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & lonely.

6th Tuesday  a fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

25th Thursday  rather a cool cloudy day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  Connel __________ to my store celler Pat Jordan helped him part of day.

26th Friday  A cloudy damp forenoon & rainey afternoon Connel part of forenoon & Pat on __________? I did my choars was at office all day and evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & sick lonely Miller Penny came to Greens with his lady.

27th Saturday  a damp misty day & wet conciderable  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  [in margin] Wm Henner came.

28th Sunday  A rainey morning & damp cloudy day & evening  I did my choars was at home all day & evening except calling to the office twice  Gould came up to Willsons about noon & went home before I went to bed at 9.

29th Monday  rather a fine cool day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.

30th Tuesday  rather cloudy cool & damp  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

10th Wednesday  rather a fine hot day but cloudy in morning  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick  Sam Wright & Emma Graves were married this evening at Aurora by Elder Button.

11th Thursday  last day of the fair  A cloudy morning & a fine day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

12th Friday  cloud in morning a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick with a cold.

13th Saturday  T Westcott got a Jerrys  A cloudy morning & fine day I did my choars was at the office all day evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick G Sidwell came to Winfield & stayed.

14th Sunday  A fine pleasant day & evening  I did my choars churned choared round the house  picked some apples etc went to the store towards night did my choars & went to bed at 9 nearly sick with a cold G Sidwell came while I was a eating breckfust, he was sick He came from Mrs Holmes yesterday & stayed at Winfield R Willson & Caroline went to H Goulds  R B Pollard 4th child & second daughter was born this morning.

15th Monday  rather a fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

16th Tuesday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

26th Thursday  rather dull hay weather   I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely.

27th Friday  rather a cloudy day but cleared off at evening or towards night & was a beautiful evening  I did my choars was at the office all day and evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

28th Saturday  rather cloudy in morning but a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

29th Sunday  A fine day some clouds  I did my choars was round home the most of the day went to the office about 10 ½ marked in cord & choared round did my choars & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & about sick, Mrs Gould was at Carolines, came about 11 & went home about 5 a hot day [in margin] Mrs Gould & youngest girl came to Carolines & called here.

30th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

31st Tuesday  A fine day for harvest  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely.”

9th Wednesday  pretty fine but cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.

10th Thursday  fine weather for May but cool & dry  I did my choars, was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick [in margin] Rol and Caroline went to her fathers.

11th Friday  fine weather but cool & dry  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick with a cold.

12th Saturday  rather a fine day with some showers  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home a little before 9 & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick [in margin] Rol & Cal cleaned house at the Pelham house.

13th Sunday  A fine pleasant day with a cool air and grew cold towards night  I did my choars was round home the most of the day a choaring round, & planted some corn & potatoes was at the office in the morning, at noon & in the evening came back & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & about sick, Carpenter & Charles Estes called here about 2 oclock Charles & his wife were on their way back to see his father in Massachusetts Caroline & Rol were a cleaning house today.

14th Monday rather a fine cool day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  David McNelly went back to.

15th Tuesday  rather a cool day & night  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick [in margin] R Willson & Caroline mooved into Pelhams house.”

21st Wednesday rather more fine but cold for March & the ground frozen I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 12 tiard & about sick Gould brought Caroline up about noon her boy was sick & she set up with him a most all night & I set up till 12.

22nd Thursday A cool morning but quite a fine day & sprinkled about sunset or before & rained some during the night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick Caroline Willson went up in the stage to go to Coral her boy was quite sick.

23rd Friday A disagreeable day & some squalley winter like I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick Hill took my colts home with him.

24th Saturday A cold cloudy morning & day & snowed more or less all day 2 or 3 inches of snow fell & brouk away towards night & was clear & cold during the evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 9 started & went back went to bed about 10 tiard & about sick & lonely.

25th Sunday A cold morning with 2 or 3 inches of snow on the ground the murcury in the thurmometer was about down to zero A cool pleasant day & evening thawed but little & none out of the sun I did my choars went to office & back about 7 then choared round the house & howen was about sick, went to office about 2 with Carpenter & came back wrote some eat supper & did my choars went to office in evening came back & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & about sick.

26th Monday rather a fine day but cool for last of March I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely & homesick.

27th Tuesday rather a cold disagreeable day & snowed some I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely.”

30th Thursday A warm damp cloudy morning & rained & spit snow a little in forenoon, the snow went off fast & it partly cleared off near noon with wind & grew cold, a cold night & froze quite hard, I came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & sick.

December 1st Friday rather a fine day but cool I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed at 9 lonely & sick.

2nd Saturday rather a fine warm cloudy or smokey day & looked like rain I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & nearly sick, Sherman Willson came to the store & got some things & said that Rollen had been sick all the week, & sent a line by him to Caroline [in margin] I sent a line to Caroline by Sher Willson.

3rd Sunday A warm cloudy muckey damp day & rained some in afternoon & evening I did my choars went to office about 8 and came back choared round the house covered up my corn crib & fixed my hen house went to the office about 4 for R B Pollard, came back did my choars & went to bed between 8 & 9 tiard lonely & nearly sick [in margin] Griffith & wife went to Willson in afternoon.

4th Monday rather fine weather for Dec. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely sick.

5th Tuesday rather fine weather for winter I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ¼ went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & about sick.

6th Wednesday fine weather but cool, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & sick.”
