Hiram E. Leonard Diary, October 29 – November 4, 1868

29th Thursday  pretty fine for Oct  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick etc [in margin] Crist from Warren came here.

30th Friday  A pretty fine day but began to rain about 4 was a rainey night with some lightning  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick Crist was here from Warren.

31st Saturday  Some cloudy & rainey in morning  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne to with trouble.

November 1st Sunday  rather cloudy in morning but cleared off pleasant & a beautiful afternoon & evening  I did my choars was at office 3 times, choared round the house & went to bed at 9 nearly sick & worne out  Eliza & Crist went to Naperville to H Goulds came back at about dark & went to meeting with Cal in evening.

2nd Monday  rather a fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 9 ½ nearly sick etc there was a festival at the Methodist Church and a meeting by Naperville folks  Dunlap etc  they took in about 80 dollars & got about 50 dols of it for the bell to the church  Warner had his mule stolen last night a Sunday night or about one oclock this morning & he has been up in my back field about 8 oclock  he was followed to Salt Creek & they went to _________.

3rd Tuesday  a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day except going to election in afternoon came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ Crist started back to Warren this morning we honestly elected the Naperville ticket but the Wheaton polls were kep open till Friday before they would give their number of votes they put in a lot of fraudulent _________ & elected their men, Childs for Legislation Rinehart for Sherrif, Hull for Recorder, Hill for county clerk & Hagaman for Coroner & cheated Robins out of the legislature, Grant from Sherrif, Gloss from Recorder, Lewis C. Stover from Clerk & Price from Coriner [in margin] Election at Wheaton was a fraud for they changed voats & added voates by the poll back.

4th Wednesday  A fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.”

18th Sunday  a fine day but some cloudy  I did my choars was at the house all day a choaring round went to the office 3 times came home & went to bed at 9 tiard & about sick, H Gould & family were here & Sabins highered man.

19th Monday  rather fine weather for Oct, I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

31st Friday  A fine day with some clouds & rained during the evening or night  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½.

August 1st Saturday  rained in the morning & cleared off in afternoon & was fine  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½  [in margin] ___________ served on the Wheaton folks & Supervisors.

2nd Sunday  A fine day but some cloudy & sprinkled toward night  I did my choars was at home the most of the [day] a choaring round was at the office in morning at noon & night I went to bed at 9 ½  H Gould was here & family today.

3rd Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out.

4th Tuesday  rather a fine day some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly worne out with trouble.

13th Saturday  A fine warm pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

14th Sunday  A fine hot day & looked like showers  I did my choars was at the house all day choaring was at store at noon & evening went to bed at 9 Gould & wife came here & took supper, Abe Stone & Miss Rogers likewise.

15th Monday  rather a damp lowerey morning but more pleasant in afternoon  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out, Caroline & Elizabeth came back from Babcock Grove & her sisters & Mrs Stone went to Ada Bostwicks.

16th Tuesday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister [in margin] Caroline commenced.

17th Wednesday  fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick worne out with trouble [in margin] Rol here & went to Wheaton lodge.”

5th Friday  rained some in forenoon cleared off in afternoon more pleasant  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with sister, Mrs Bliss got home from Association [in margin] George pretty tite on cider.

6th Saturday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

7th Sunday  A fine warm pleasant day  I did my choars was round the house all day a choaring went to the office in the evening came home & went to bed at 9 nearly sick  Rol Willson & Matta Gould called here a while & went home [in margin] Jo Ferry & wife were at D Kenyons.

8th Monday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the store all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out [in margin] Mrs Miner preached.

9th Tuesday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Caroline Willson & Eliza McNelly came from their father’s in Iowa last week & got here this morning  before 9, 10.

30th Saturday  A fine growing day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble with Sister.

31st Sunday  A fine warme cloudy growing day looks like showers  I did my choars was at the house a choaring round the most of the time, Mooved the milk ______ down celler etc was at the office 3 times came back & went to bed at 9  Rol Willson & Motta Gould were here to supper & Rolen paid me 40 dollars on note.

June 1st Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

2nd Tuesday  rather fine but cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & tiard  Mrs Bliss & Mrs Fowler went to Aurora to the Baptist Assosiation.

3rd Wednesday  Some showerey  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick [in margin] Perry came home with the navy owed.”

24th Sunday  A fine hot day  I did my choars & went to the store came back & took my colt to Nick Collings, then choared round the house & fixed the fence & was at the store in evening came home & went to bed at 9, Mrs Stone went over the river, Mrs Gould came up with Adda.

25th Monday  A fine day & growing time  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble & Sister.

26th Tuesday  fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & sick & worne out with Sister.

17th Sunday  A fine warm pleasant day  cool towards night  I did my choars, was at home the most of the day went to the office twice & in the evening came back & went to bed about 9 sick & tiard  Mrs. Stone was at Owens & Raynolds.

18th Monday  rather fine weather but cool  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & nearly worne out with trouble.

2nd Thursday  A fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & discouraged.

3rd Friday  some stormey  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & discouraged.

4th Saturday  rather a fine day & thaws  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

5th Sunday  A fine pleasant warm day but clouded up at night & rained in the evening  I did my choars was round home the most of the day went to the office 3 times came home & went to bed at 9 Gould & wife came here & went home about 4 the came about noon  Rol Willson called with them & stayed about an hour & left.

6th Monday  fine weather for winter  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 & went to bed at 9 ½ sick.

7th Tuesday  fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ worne out with trouble.”

December 1st Sunday  rather a fine day but some cloudy  I did my choars was at the house all day a choaring round  Gould came at 2 & then went & found the colts at Galushas came home eat supper did my choars & went to bed at 9 about sick  Ada Bostwick & wife came & L V Resseguie in evening.

2nd Monday  rather fine cold weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & discouraged.
