Hiram E. Leonard Diary, December 29, 1864 – January 4, 1865

29th Thursday fine cold weather, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

30th Friday fine winter weather not very cold but did not thaw I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ went to bed about 9 ½ sick [A Fowler mooved to the boarding house – in margin].

31st Saturday A fine cool winter day rather poor sleighing I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick.

1865 January 1st Sunday rather a fine winter day for New Years not verry cold but did not thaw, I did my choars was at the office the most of the day, went to the office for Roll Willson about 10, came home & choared round the most of the day, went to the office in evening came home & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick The Williams came down about one & get E A Potter to go up to New Years to eat a turkey, She came back about 9 ½ from Willsons. [Mrs E A Potter went to Willsons to new years in afternoon – in margin].

2nd Monday rather fine weather for the first of January I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ nearly sick.

3rd Tuesday fine winter weather but no sleighing but does not thaw, I did my choars was at the office mostly all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick. [Elder Morstor went into the Fowler house – in margin].

Jan 4th Wednesday A fine winter day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with cold. [George Sidney came here from Rockford stayed one night – in margin].”

22nd Thursday cool fine weather with quite good sleighing I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard & sick.

23rd Friday fine winter weather for December I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

24th Saturday A fine pleasant day for winter I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ went to bed about 9 ½ [in margin] Caroline went to her fathers.

25th Sunday A cloudy damp day mist some & snow a little I did my choars went to the office before breckfust, after breckfust, I cleaned out my howels & choared round till noon, then went to Sherman Willsons & Rollen harnessed up & carried me into my timber, we got back at 3 & eat supper & I came home did my choars went to the office about 6 & made up the mail came back wrote some washed my feet & went to bed between 8 & 9 tiard & about sick [in margin] Caroline was at home I went to Sherman Willsons  Anna Jones was married to a Mr. Ugene Mann, of Batavia, Married in Chicago.

26th Monday rather fine weather, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

27th Tuesday rather fine weather for winter, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

28th Wednesday rather a fine day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.”

8th Thursday rather a winter day with snow I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed a little after 9, nearly sick.

9th Friday A pretty fine day but cool I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

10th Saturday A fine pleasant day & warm in the middle A cloudy night & snowed before 9, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½.

11th Sunday A cloudy windy snow squally disagreeable day the snow flew all day & evening I & pretty cold I did my choars was round home all day a choaring & takeing care of my cattle went to the office in the evening & made up the mail came home & went to bed between 8 and 9.

12th Monday rather a cold winter day with the ground covered with snow & quite passable sleighing I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 sick.

13th Tuesday rather fine winter weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ nearly sick.

14th Wednesday rather fine winter weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ about sick.”

December 1st Thursday rather cloudy weather, I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

2nd Friday rather more pleasant today I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & sick.

3rd Saturday cleared off cold & froz I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick Charley Noonen died Charles Noon died ½ before nine tonight.

4th Sunday A fine pleasant day but some cloudy I did my choars was at the home the most of the day went to office 4 times worked round the house & went to the office in evening & made up the mail came home & wrote some & went to bed between 8 & 9 nearly sick Mrs Potter & Charles went to meeting Roll Willson Albert Grant Hut McNelly, Sarah Brown & Griffeth were here today & evening & Hut stayed all night [in margin] Charles Noones was brought home ded today from Downers he died last night ¼ before 9 at _______.

5th Monday rather fine winter weather & snowed last night a little I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½.

6th Tuesday rather fine winter weather but rough wagoning I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 [in margin] C Noonen was buried funeral at Baptist Church Elder Marston.

7th Wednesday rather fine but cool & cloudy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at about 8 & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick.”

25th Friday rather fine weather but cloudy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

26th Saturday A cloudy damp day but clear pleasant night. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick Caroline went down.

27th Sunday A cloudy damp disagreeable day & night I did my choars was at the house all day, at work, cleaned out my howel, big pen, hen house & back house and many other choars, wrote some in the evening & went to bed between 8 & 9 tiard lonely & nearly sick & home sick.

28th Monday rather cloudy disagreeable weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

29th Tuesday rather cloudy weather & mudy, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

30th Wednesday rather cloudy muddy weather I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

17th Thursday cold cloudy weather freezes every night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely.

18th Friday rather cold but fine weather I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick [in margin] Caroline got back from her fathers.

19th Saturday rather a fine day, some cloudy & not as cold   I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 tiard sick & lonely Mrs. E. A. Potter got an express package from Aurora Sherman from Iowa with ten dollars in it for her to come out there.

20th Sunday rather a fine pleasant forenoon but cloudy afternoon & sprinkled a little about 8 & then cleared off & cold & grew cold fast was a cold night I did my choars was round home till about 11 when I went with C Noonen & H Gould to Cal Wrays to help about plastering her house but the morter was frozen & we came back between 12 & one & Cal came down with us & Goulds folks were here, they left at 3 ½ & about 4 I got Waddles wagon & carried Col home & Elizabeth Potter & Charley went up, we got back before dark I did my choars wrote some & went to bed about 8 ½ tiard sick & lonely & homesick, Elizabeth wrote to Aurora S. & George Potter.

21st Monday  rather fine weather for Nov I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening I came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

22nd Tuesday rather fine cloudy weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

23rd Wednesday rather fine weather for Nov I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.”

“10th Thursday A cloudy damp morning & day grew cold in the afternoon & the wind blew very hard & blew hard all night a tremendious hard wind I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

“11th Friday A cold rane day & night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

“12th Saturday rather a fine cool day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick— [in margin] Elizabeth got a letter from George.

“13th Sunday A most beautiful day & evening the finest day we have had in many weeks, I did my choars was at the office in morning came back & fenced my stacks & choared round etc went to bed between 8 & 9 tiard & sick  Elizabeth & Charles went to both meeting.

“14th Monday rather fine cold weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & sick.

“15th Tuesday rather fine weather but cool for Nov I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

“16th Wednesday rather cold cloudy raw weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely and lonely as death.”

“3rd Thursday rather fine weather but some cloudy. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

“4th Friday rather a fine day & a cold night cloudy day & clear night, I did my choars was at the office all day 7 till 6 ½ in evening then went to Methodist church to hear Cody make a political speech went home about ½ past 9 & soon went to bed nearly sick.

“5th Saturday A fine pleasant beautiful day for Nov. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick [in margin] Mrs Stowels husband came home at night.

“6th Sunday rather a fine morning but a cloudy day with squalls of rain a most all day rather a hard day. I did my choars was at the house most of the day choaring round & fixing corn crib, went to office about noon came back wrote some in evening & went to bed about 9 tiard & lonely Charles went to Carolines to got to go to her father but did not go Tom Pelham was married to Mrs Ellin or Hellin York today by Elder Ofield at Downers Grove.

“8th Tuesday rather a cool cloudy damp & some misty day. I did my choars was at the office till about one oclock when I came up & went to election with Jerry Pollard came back between 3 & 4 went to the store came home eat supper & went back came home 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick it mist a little in evening & rained before morning, A Lincoln got 180 majority over McLellen, McLellen had 58 or 59 a pretty still election.

“27th Thursday rather fine but cloudy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick Expressed 400. to Wellman.

“28th Friday cloudy damp weather I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ tiard & lonely & about sick.

“29th Saturday rather a cloudy damp day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & about sick. Caroline came down & stayed over night with Elizabeth.

“30th Sunday A cloudy damp day & evening. I did my choars went & got Warrens Waggon & carried Caroline & Elizabeth to H Goulds & I went to Naperville and got a vest cut came back Charly & Elizabeth went back with Caroline & _______________ wagon home & wrote some etc went to bed between 8 & 9 tiard lonely and nearly sick.

“21st Friday rather fine cool weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ lonely & nearly sick.

“22nd Saturday A fine day & beautiful evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed a little after 9 tiard lonely & about sick & had the blues Richard Chandler wife & Mrs Potter went to Naperville came back & she & sister had a spat & they were a little cross & it made me feel lonely & evening was out of gear.

“23rd Sunday A fine pleasant day & evening. I did my choars was around home all day & evening was at office twice choared round etc went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & about sick. Mrs Potter went to Meeting & about 3 oclock started Methadist meeting & went up to Griffiths & Williamses Sister went home with York & wife about 2 oclock.
