Hiram E. Leonard Diary, May 22 – 28, 1867

22nd Wednesday  cold backward weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & tuckered out with sister.

23rd Thursday  cold backward weather for May  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick.

24th Friday cold backward weather rained & hailed a little  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick.

25th Saturday  A cloudy damp morning & cold  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly worn out.

26th Sunday A cold pleasant day I did my choars turned my colt into the paster & fixed my fence & choared round, got Jont Pollards horse & buggy & carried sister out a riding west as far as Finleys came back & choared round & went to bed at 9.

27th Monday  rather fine cold weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at  8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold & trouble.

28th Tuesday rather fine but cold for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick with a cold & very kep awake by Sister.”

6th Wednesday  good sleighing over a foot & half of snow  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

7th Thursday  fine winter weather thawed some  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ sick with a cold.

8th Friday  fine winter weather & thawed some grew cold at night   I did my choars was at the office all day etc  I come home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ about sick with a cold etc.

9th Saturday  A cold morning the murcury stood at 8 degrees below zero in morning a cold day & night  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick with a  cold, thurmometer below zero at sunset.

10th Sunday  A cold pleasant morning & cold day, clouded up about noon & looked like snow  The mercury stood in the thurmometer at _____ degrees below zero in the morning  I did my choars was at the office about 10 & 1 ½, choared round the house the most of the day & round hog pen & howel  I was at office in evening came home & went to bed about 9 about sick  Protracted meeting yet  R B Pollard got home from Vermont.

11th Monday  rather fine weather for winter  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.

12th Tuesday  rather fine & a growing more warm  I did my choars was at the I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick with a cold.”

17th Saturday  A fine cool & some cloudy day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  R B Pollard came home from Iowa  wher Ed Brown was.

18th Sunday  rather a fine morning but cloudy in middle & after part of day & sprinkled at about 2 or 3  I did my choars was round home the most of the day went to the office twice, the last time with Goulds & Whitny  his wife called at Willsons a short time & they went back as it began to sprinkle  Willson & Caroline eat supper here I was at Willsons in evening came home went to bed between 8 & 9 tiard & about sick with a cold Matta Gould stayed overnight.

19th Monday  rather a fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

20th Tuesday  rather fine weather for Nov  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely.”

November 1st Thursday  rather fine but cool & some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick, Schovell & wife Fredenhagen & wife, Sim Billings & wife & Caroline Willson went down to Naperville in the stage to a Ball & Caroline came back home with R Pollard.

2nd Friday  rather a fine day but some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home 8 ½ to bed 9 ½ tiard & sick.

3rd Saturday  rather a cloudy disagreeable day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  Henry Rogers was married to Roset Beardsly this afternoon at Turner by Methodist minister.

4th Sunday  A cold cloudy raw day & cleared off in evening  I did my choars & went to Goulds with Bliss horse Wallace went with me got home at sunset went to Salors & got my photograph taken went to store in evening went to bed at 8 ½ sick Roll Cal went to Sher Willsons.

5th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & lonely.

6th Tuesday  a fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

20th Saturday  A cloudy damp rainey day & evening & hailed a little about 10 A M was a nasty day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick with a cold.

21st Sunday  A cloudy damp disagreeable day with several showers  I did my choars was at the house all day a choaring round the house, cleaned out the hog pen etc was at the office once & went to bed at 9 nearly sick.

22nd Monday  rather cloudy & cool  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.

11th Thursday  last day of the fair  A cloudy morning & a fine day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

12th Friday  cloud in morning a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick with a cold.

13th Saturday  T Westcott got a Jerrys  A cloudy morning & fine day I did my choars was at the office all day evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick G Sidwell came to Winfield & stayed.

14th Sunday  A fine pleasant day & evening  I did my choars churned choared round the house  picked some apples etc went to the store towards night did my choars & went to bed at 9 nearly sick with a cold G Sidwell came while I was a eating breckfust, he was sick He came from Mrs Holmes yesterday & stayed at Winfield R Willson & Caroline went to H Goulds  R B Pollard 4th child & second daughter was born this morning.

15th Monday  rather a fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

16th Tuesday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

28th Wednesday rather a cold raw disagreeable day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & lonely sunset cloudy.

29th Thursday A fine pleasant day with a cool air I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & about sick & lonely as death [in margin] sunset clear.

30th Friday A cold raw cloudy disagreeable day & night I did my chaors was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick B C Williams & wife came from Chicago & stoped at F Pollard Wm Wright & wife were at Watermans, Wright came the first I saw him since they were married [in margin] Sunset in a cloud.

31st Saturday A fine pleasant day cloudy at night the snow run finely I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ about sick & homesick froze but little tonight.

April 1st Sunday A fine pleasant warm day & evening sun shone warm but rather a cool air I did my choars was round the house all day except going to the office toward night I was about sick I had the rheumatism or crick through my hips & back so that I could hardly do my choars & had to sit in the house a most all day fixed the mail at office in evening came back & went to bed at about 9 nearly sick & home sick had the rheumatism [in margin] Mrs Lela Potter stayed all night.

2nd Monday Mathers ded tonight rather a fine day but cool & verry muddy I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

3rd Tuesday rather a fine day but some cloudy & verry muddy bad going I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick Town meeting today A C Graves elected Supervisor Jonathan Pollard who was beaten Germane & a Mr Ketshum justices of the Peace.”

30th Thursday A warm damp cloudy morning & rained & spit snow a little in forenoon, the snow went off fast & it partly cleared off near noon with wind & grew cold, a cold night & froze quite hard, I came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & sick.

December 1st Friday rather a fine day but cool I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed at 9 lonely & sick.

2nd Saturday rather a fine warm cloudy or smokey day & looked like rain I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & nearly sick, Sherman Willson came to the store & got some things & said that Rollen had been sick all the week, & sent a line by him to Caroline [in margin] I sent a line to Caroline by Sher Willson.

3rd Sunday A warm cloudy muckey damp day & rained some in afternoon & evening I did my choars went to office about 8 and came back choared round the house covered up my corn crib & fixed my hen house went to the office about 4 for R B Pollard, came back did my choars & went to bed between 8 & 9 tiard lonely & nearly sick [in margin] Griffith & wife went to Willson in afternoon.

4th Monday rather fine weather for Dec. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely sick.

5th Tuesday rather fine weather for winter I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ¼ went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & about sick.

6th Wednesday fine weather but cool, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & sick.”

25th Sunday A cloudy damp misty morning & forenoon, more pleasant in afternoon I did my choars went to office about 8, R Pollard cut my hair I came back & was round the house the most of the day a choaring did my choars at night & went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

26th Monday rather fine weather but wet I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

27th Tuesday fine growing weather with showers about every day or night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9.

22nd Saturday A cold windy cloudy day snowed several times dureing the day a pretty tedious day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely and about sick with a cold etc.

23rd Sunday rather a fine pleasant day but windy & cold I did my choars went to office before breckfust came back & choared round a part of the day & rested some, went to office in evening & made up the mail, came home & went to bed about 9 lonely & about sick old Mrs Culver was buried.

24th Monday rather fine weather but cool & cloudy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick with cold.
