Hiram E. Leonard Diary, September 3 – 9, 1868

3rd Thursday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Miller at Winfield brought down Barber & Hall came for company & was at the saloon, Barber & Hall went somewhere & Miller got tiard of wating & started to find them, old Mrs McFerren came today.

4th Friday  A fine day for Sept. I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out with trouble Kenyon & Jose Hellm went to Naperville & came round by B Bartholomews to see Mrs McFerrin.

5th Saturday  rather a cloudy day & rained about five oclock & dureing the night  I did my choars was at the office all day came home & 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble of Sister  Kenyon discharged Miss Helm & she went to Naperville & stayed at J Pomeroys, J Billings was there & left & met Barber Barber went & stayed a while.

6th Sunday  A cloudy damp disagreeable morning and day  I did my choars went to office came back & choared round the house, Saw John Billings was at the office in the evening came home & went to bed about 9, J Billings went to Geneva.

7th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my chaors was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly worne out with Sister Joseph Helm went to Chicago.

8th Tuesday  cloudy & rained a part of the day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly worne out with trouble & Sister, Mrs Stone commenced to D Kenyons tonight.

9th Wednsday  rather a fine day I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.”

12th Wednesday  A cold raw day with the roads verry rough bad waggoning  I did my choars was at the office all day and evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick with a  cold.

13th Thursday  A cool raw cloudy day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick [in margin] Willson halled salt from Winfield both of them.

14th Friday  A cool garden & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick R Willson halled 2 tun of coal.

15th Saturday  A cool raw cloudy day  & began to snow a little in the evening I did my choars was at the at the office all all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  S Willson drew me 1 day coal.

16th Sunday  the snow fell several inches last night & it snowed some amost all day, I did my choars was at home the most of the day  I went to the office 4 times & helped Willson cover the howels with straw wrote some & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick with a cold had been out in the cold the most of the day.

17th Monday  rather a fine day for December  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick.

18th Tuesday  fine weather for the season  snow & showers  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick.”

10th Wednesday  rather a fine hot day but cloudy in morning  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick  Sam Wright & Emma Graves were married this evening at Aurora by Elder Button.

11th Thursday  last day of the fair  A cloudy morning & a fine day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

12th Friday  cloud in morning a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick with a cold.

13th Saturday  T Westcott got a Jerrys  A cloudy morning & fine day I did my choars was at the office all day evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick G Sidwell came to Winfield & stayed.

14th Sunday  A fine pleasant day & evening  I did my choars churned choared round the house  picked some apples etc went to the store towards night did my choars & went to bed at 9 nearly sick with a cold G Sidwell came while I was a eating breckfust, he was sick He came from Mrs Holmes yesterday & stayed at Winfield R Willson & Caroline went to H Goulds  R B Pollard 4th child & second daughter was born this morning.

15th Monday  rather a fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

16th Tuesday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

25th Wednesday  A cold day with frost in morning  I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & about sick.

26th Thursday  rather fine for April but cool  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ lonely & sick.

27th Friday  A fine hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.

28th Saturday  A fine day but cool, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at about 10 about sick  Rolen & Caroline went to Winfield near night and got back about 8 ½, A Moorer had a sheep & lamb killed in the road by a span of horses that ran away, I skinned them in evening.

29th Sunday  A fine pleasant day & quite warm in the middle of the day but cool at night  I did my choars went to office & back eat breckfust and choared round the house all day, fixed fence etc was at office in evening came back and went to bed about 10 tiard lonely & about sick, Rol Caroline & boy went to Shermans.

30th Monday  fine cold weather & pretty dry  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

16th Thursday rather a cloudy disagreeable day & very muddy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ sick Jerry Pollard carried the mail, G O Potter came from Kankakee to Winfield & had to stay to Hixes all night.

17th Friday rather more pleasant & cool froz some came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick G O Potter came down from Winfield with Jerry Pollard got here before noon [in margin] G O Potter & wife got at my house.

18th Saturday rather a fine day but cloudy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 9 & went to bed about 10 nearly sick.

19th Sunday a most beautiful day for March I did my choars was at the office in morning came home about 9 choared round the most of the day went the office in the evening & made up the mail came back at 7, wrote some & went to bed at 9 sick.

20th Monday fine weather for the season I did my choars was at the office all day and evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely as death.

21st Tuesday rather fine weather for the season I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick.

22nd Wednesday rather fine weather for the season some cold I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick.”

“7th Thursday muddy backward weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonesome & nearly sick.

“8th Friday damp disagreeable weather & backward I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonesome.

“9th Saturday damp disagreeable weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonesome—George was expected but did not come.

“10th Sunday rather a fine day but some cloudy, I did my choars was round home the most of the day went to the office & Hoyts, came home & went to bed about 8 ½ tiard & nearly sick & lonesome, George Potter got home about sunrise or a little before stayed at Winfield, he went to bed & they did not get up till near noon, they were about sick Israel Kenyon died tonight about 10 oclock [in margin] I Kenyon died tonight at 10 G Potter got home from Chicago this morning.

“11th Monday A damp disagreeable day & rained several times. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & lonesome. George & Elizabeth went to Kenyons & stayed all night and tomorrow to funeral.

“12th Tuesday rather more pleasant but disagreeable day to get round I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonesome. Israel Kenyon was buryed at big wood today. George & wife came home, near night.

“13th Wednesday rather disagreeable weather for spring. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 nearly sick & lonely.”

10th Wednesday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home by Hoyts 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ sick with a  cold. Frank Wellman started from Michigan to come here.

11th Thursday  rather a fine day for Feb. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ by Hoyts & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick, Griffeth got home with Sams Corpse at about noon.

12th Friday A fine pleasant sunshiney day looks more like April than Feb. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ by Hoyts & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick. Sam Griffeth was buried this afternoon, Elder Bicknell came from Michigan & left Frank Wellman at Winfield over night.

13th Saturday  A fine pleasant sunshiney day, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 by Hoyts & went to bed about 9 nearly sick. Caroline was down & Mrs Potter & Charles went home with her about dusk walked. Frank Wellman came today noon, took dinner at Noonens & eat supper at my house & came about 12 & stayed at my house called before supper at Brookses, he & Julia went & foddered the horses at the barn & he done Julias choars: Brooks was sick.

14th Sunday  A fine pleasant day more like April than Feb. I did my choars was round home all day choaring & making vinager went to office towards night, went to bed about 9 nearly sick. Frank went to Winfield with Tom Watson. Mrs Potter got home dark.

15th Monday  A fine day for winter but pretty cold, about 20 degrees below zero in morning. I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came home & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

16th Tuesday  A fine cold day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick with a cold.”

5th Wednesday  A fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½.

6th Thursday  A fine day some cloudy evening & a shower. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½. Hat came & Caroline went home with him. Amanda Straus came stayed all night.

7th Friday  A cloudy damp morning & day, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home between 8 & 9 & soon went to bed, Frank Wellman & his father arrived from Michigan they were here at dinner & supper & stayed all night. Frank did not come in till near 12.

8th Saturday  A cloudy damp morning & hot day more pleasant. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & soon went to bed, Frank & his father went to Aurora & back did not find what they went after got back at dusk disappointed, A heavey thunder shower all night almost & lightning.

9th Sunday  A cloudy damp muggy morning more pleasant in afternoon but cloudy. I did my choars was at home most of the day, went to store about 9 with Frank came back fixed some fence wrote some choared round some etc called at Hoyts at night & went to bed about 9, Frank & Father stayed here, Frank & J M Warren went to Winfield about noon & got home about 8 ½, a heavey shower near night.

10th Monday  rather a cloudy morning but more pleasant during the day I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came home about 8 ½ & soon went to bed tiard & nearly sick. Frank & his father left here this morning for Chicago & was a going home to York State.

11th Tuesday  rather fine weather but some cloudy, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.”

5th Friday  rather a fine day but some cloudy & rained a little at night, I did my choars was at the office all day and evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick.

6th Saturday  A cool cloudy day, with a cold North East wind. I did my choars went to McNellys & Caroline went, I then went to Cottage Hill & sold the horses waggon and harness to Mung for 110, Dors came back to McNellys & David started home with us about 4 we got home a little after six & found Israel Kenyons wife & Ezra Jones wife here Isreal came & took supper & Elizabeth went home with them.

7th Sunday A fine cool & some cloudy day & evening. I did my choars was round the house a choaring and doing went to the office towards night & to Hoyts in evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 Elizabeth came back about dusk. David started back a little before noon.

8th Monday rather fine warm weather. I did my choars at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

9th Tuesday rather fine weather but dry & cool nights. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½. Frank quit at Winfield came down & stayed all night.”

21st Sunday  A cool cloudy damp disagreeable day & night & with the ground covered with frozen rain & sleet.  I did my choars Sherman Willson came after his wife as we were a eating breckfust.  I choared round some was at home till after one when David started with Caroline & Hat then I went to Ed Browns with Frank & helped eat a can of oysters went to office & came back between 2 & 3 called at Hoyts & came home wrote & red some eat supper went to Hoyts in evening came about 8 & went to bed about sick & lonesome, Frank went to Junction & Winfield.”
