Hiram E. Leonard Diary, April 2nd – 8th, 1868

2nd Thursday  fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with trouble  Sim Billings got whipped at the tavern [in margin] A Ball at Perry & Sim Billings got whipped.

3rd Friday  fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  William Jorden was buried this afternoon he bled to death at the lungs.

4th Saturday  A snowey morning & forenoon it began to snow about 4 oclock in the morning snowed pretty fast the most of the forenoon fell three or four inches a pretty cold night  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble, Daniel Kenyon deeded his farm to S.B. Hill today.

5th Sunday  A fine cool morning & day with the ground covered with snow  The thurmometer at about 12 degrees above zero pretty cool  I did my choars went to the office came home & choared round the house the most of the day, went to the office made up the mail came home & went to bed at about 9 nearly sick  Mrs Stone went to C Owens about 10.

6th Monday  A cool disagreeable day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

7th Tuesday  rather cold rough weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly and worne out with trouble & Sisters actions.

8th Wednesday  cold backward weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out with Sister.”

8th Wednesday  rather fine weather but cool  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard & nearly sick.

9th Thursday  fine cool weather with squalls  I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick with a cold  [in margin] Sim Billings second boy was born at the Knox or Harlow house.

10th Friday  A fine day with a cool air I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick.

11th Saturday A fine pleasant warm day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day came home 8 ½ & went to bed at nearly 10 nearly sick with a cold Sister pretty bad.

12th Sunday A fine pleasant morning with a cool north east wind & rained a little about 11 broaken away some about noon  I did my choars went to office for Hammond & fed my cat came back choared round wrote some took a nap was at office in evening came home & went to bed about 9 nearly sick George went up to Williams.

13th Monday fine cool weather for spring  I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard & nearly worn out with sister.

14th Tuesday cold but pleasant weather  I did my choars was at the office all day nearly sick came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold & ____ up.”

31st Wednesday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 sick.

November 1st Thursday  rather fine but cool & some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick, Schovell & wife Fredenhagen & wife, Sim Billings & wife & Caroline Willson went down to Naperville in the stage to a Ball & Caroline came back home with R Pollard.

2nd Friday  rather a fine day but some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home 8 ½ to bed 9 ½ tiard & sick.

3rd Saturday  rather a cloudy disagreeable day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  Henry Rogers was married to Roset Beardsly this afternoon at Turner by Methodist minister.

4th Sunday  A cold cloudy raw day & cleared off in evening  I did my choars & went to Goulds with Bliss horse Wallace went with me got home at sunset went to Salors & got my photograph taken went to store in evening went to bed at 8 ½ sick Roll Cal went to Sher Willsons.

5th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & lonely.

6th Tuesday  a fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

9th Thursday A most beautiful day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & sick.

10th Friday A fine day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard & lonely.

11th Saturday A most beautiful day I did my choars was at the office a part of the day & at the house a part of the day a seeing to the thrashing, Willson & Wilcox came about 9 & kep me pretty busy, they got done about 4 ½ we had 313 bushels, I came home at 8 & went to bed tiard, sick & lonely as death [in margin] Willson & Wilcox thrashed oats.

12th Sunday A most beautiful day & evening & warm day cool evening I did my choars went to office & back each breckfust, Connel came & helped me to pout my straw stacks & fence my stacks etc He went home & I fixed my corn crib etc I went to office & Sim Billings in evening came back, wrot some & went to bed about 9 or a little before tiard sick & lonely as death & dishartened [in margin] I dremp of seeing Wm J Wray come into the store tonight & talked with him.

13th Monday A fine pleasant day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard & nearly sick & as lonely as death Temperance Butler died this morning about 4 oclock in the morning very sudden, was taken with the pleurasy last Tuesday.

14th Tuesday fine weather for the season I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard & lonely.

15th Wednesday A fine day I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening come home at 8 and went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & sick they brought Temperance Butlers boddy up here to have the funeral.”
