Hiram E. Leonard Diary, April 3 – 9, 1867

3rd Wednesday  disagreeable weather & bad roads  I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick  Sister we carried over to Dr Waterman in afternoon  She stayed all night.

4th Thursday  A cloudy damp day cooler toward night  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & lonely  I brought Sister from Dr Watermans about 9  F Gary brought us in a buggy.

5th Friday  A cold disagreeable morning with a flurry of snow on the ground & frozen it snowed a little flurrys today  I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 sick  Sally Munk went home & Mrs Stone came & stayed–.

6th Saturday A cold morning with the ground frozen  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ & had a fine rest but was about sick  Mrs Stone was here & stayed all night  Sally Munk at home.

7th Sunday  A verry fine warm day & evening  I did my choars went to office & got some medacine came home  choared round all day was at the office in the evening came home & went to bed about 9 nearly sick about 9  Mrs Stone was here all day & night except going home at noon a ____________.

8th Monday rather a fine day but cool  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick with a cold [in margin] Mrs Stone here.

9th Tuesday  rather fine cool for April  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick  Sister pretty bad off.”

27th Wednesday  cold weather freezes a nights & thaws a days & is muddy I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick [in margin] snowed Casper Watson & Nella Green were married about this time.

28th Thursday  cold for March & muddy  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 sick & lonely.

29th Friday  A cold raw day thawed & made it muddy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & lonely.

30th Saturday  A cold day for March & froze at night  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 9 & went to bed at 10 ½ about sick with a cold Mrs Stone stayed all night with sister  My cow calved this forenoon [in margin] Mrs Stone stayed.

31st Sunday  A fine pleasant morning but cloudy day & cool  I did my choars went to office then got Grant & Resseguie to come & help  Willsons cow calve in morning  I choared round house Ed Munk called, was at office in evening went to bed at 10 [in margin] Willson cow calved.

April 1st Monday Cool disagreeable weather for April  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & lonely.

2nd Tuesday  cool disagreeable weather with bad roads  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard & sick Town meeting.”

20th Wednesday  cool for March roads muddy  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick  sister deranged.

21st Thursday  rather cool March weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 sick, lonely & discouraged Sister sick.

22nd Friday A cloudy damp day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 about sick wood chopers here this week.

23rd Saturday  A cloudy damp day & rained in evening  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick  Sally Munk here [in margin] cutting wood.

24th Sunday  A snowey morning, snowed fast for a short time was an inch or two deep  I did my choars was at the office after breckfust came back & choared round the house the rest of the day & went to bed about 9 or 10, we mooved sister into the front room.

25th Monday  a cold day for March thawed some a days & freeze a nights I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick.

26th Tuesday  A cold day for March some mudy days I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & lonely.”

13th Wednesday  A cold morning thurmometer at 10 degrees below zero in morning  A cold day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely—Sister was nirvas & lightheaded.

14th Thursday  rather a cold day for March  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely.

15th Friday  cool weather for March  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & about sick with a cold.

16th Saturday  cool & spit snow a little cleared off at night cold  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & about sick & lonely.

17th Sunday  A cold windy  morning & day with a flurry of snow on the ground cold tonight  I did my choars & choared round the house all day called at Scovills & Willsons in the morning went to the office in evening & made up the mail came home & called to Willsons came home & went to bed at about 9.

18th Monday  rather a fine cool March day  I did my choars was at the office the most of the day came home  about 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick Sally Munk came in afternoon.

19th Tuesday  rather fine cold March weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard & sick, lonely & about discouraged  Sally Munk was here all day & went to Donation in evening [in margin] Donation at Methodist Church.”

Hiram E. Leonard Diary, June 9 – 15, 1864

“9th Thursday fine cold dry weather for June, I did my choars was at the office the most of the day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick lonesome & lonely. Capt Ed Munk took the 3d degree in Masonry tonight.

“10th Friday rather a cold & a very cold night for June almost freezing. I did my choars was at the office till near 10 then went to Naperville with James Hoyt & H. D. Fowler to prove up the will, came home about 2 & stayed at the office all the rest of the day came here about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely Capt Ed Munk started Chattanooga today & sent 50 dollars to get William Wrays body by Ed Munk. We heered that Dr S H Potter was shot & his boddy on its way home [in margin] mair to horse cold Ed Munk started for Army.

“11th Saturday A very cold morning & day for June a little frost but the wind kep it off. I did my choars was at the office the most of the day, went with Pollard & T. Jones to Hoyts & appraised his personal property in forenoon came home at 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ tiard sick lonely etc, a lonesome day & night, Rollen Willson George Potter, Caroline & Elizabeth went to Aurora, got back at 5 oclock.

“12th Sunday A cold morning & a little frost very cold dry weather for June, I got up at 6 did my choars was at office, eat breckfust about 9 ½ choared round was at Hoyts, took my mair to Pollards paster on the Col Warrens came home from office 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely a little frost this morning.

“13th Monday rather fine cold weather dry weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick & lonely.

“14th Tuesday fine cool dry weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & lonesome. Dr. H S Potters funeral at Danby, Wm. Potter & his mother came here.

“15th Wednesday A fine cool dry day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & as lonely as death etc.”

Hiram E. Leonard Diary, May 26 – June 1, 1864

“26th Thursday A fine pleasant dry day a little more cool. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick lonely & unhappy, old Mrs. Billings got a letter from stating that Wm J Wray was shot through the jugular vain in the neck & died almost instantly. Crel Monk was shot through the lung, died in about 24 hours [in margin] I sent Suns letters up to Cal Wray & Willson did not let her read it they were ________.

“27th Friday A fine pleasant day & getting very dry. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ about & lonely, Wm Griffeth told Caroline that Wm was dead, shot, She came down here about 6 a short time & went back feeling bad.

“28th Saturday a fine pleasant day & more warm. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard sick & lonely. Caroline was down & went to Naperville with Rollen Willson, William McNelly & wife came to Cals & he came here a short time went ______.

“29th Sunday rather fine weather but very windy & some cloudy, I did my choars was at home almost all day choaring & planting garden called at Hoyts in evening came home & went to bed about 9 nearly sick & lonely. Rollen Willson carried Caroline & Hall up home to their fathers.

“30th Monday rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ and went to bed nearly sick & lonely about 9 ½.

“31st Tuesday fine pleasant weather but cool. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

“June 1st Wednesday A fine warm day & evening. I did my chaors was at the office al day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely.”

11th Wednesday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick. R Denham was buryed today.

12th Thursday rather fine weather & looks like Indian Summer. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½. Joseph Munks remains arrived today.

13th Friday fine weather for the season, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a  cold.

14th Saturday  rather a fine day & evening it sprinkled some in afternoon & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ sick.

15th Sunday  A cool cloudy damp morning & spit snow a little. A cloudy damp day & evening, I did my choars went to the office about 10 for Green came back by Hoyts came home & banked my house some, started for my timber at one got to Sherman Willsons at about 3 & at home 5 ½ wrote some, went to bed 8 ½ nearly sick, Joseph Monk was buryed McLafferty preached.

16th Monday  rather fine weather for the season, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening. I came home about 8 ½ tiard & nearly sick went to bed about 9 ½. T W Watsons boy died, Dan Charles Potter _________ going to scool.

17th Tuesday  rather fine for Nov. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”
