Hiram E. Leonard Diary, October 22 – 28, 1868

22nd Thursday  rather fine for Oct  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

23rd Friday  A fine pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out [in margin] John Billings came to Sims.

24th Saturday  fine weather for Oct  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  John Billings & lady left Sim Billings this forenoon for Aurora, they came yesterday.

25th Sunday  A most beautiful warm pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office in morning at noon & night, was round the house the most of the day a choaring etc went to bed about 9 nearly sick  Mrs Stone & Eliza McNelly went to Wheaton with Emma  Stone for her to go to Indiana  Benjamin Hoath came.

26th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

27th Tuesday  fine cold weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

28th Wednesday  fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick etc.”

27th Thursday  A fine hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Crosier thrashed on mine they had 576 bushels of oats & 13 ½ bush wheat.

28th Friday  A fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 10 tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble & sister  George McCauley from lotts creek came here at 11 & stayed all night, he wanted Eliza McNelly to go back with him Kenyon went to Aurora & got a revolver [in margin] Caroline sick.

29th Saturday  A fine day but sprinkled a little in the forenoon & was clouds  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly worne out with Sister, Mc Cauley started about 12 to go back to Iowa without Eliza but she wanted to go  Mooved to Aurora  [in margin] Caroline sick  McCuly started __________.

30th Sunday  A fine day but rather cloudy  I did my choars was round the house the most of the day went to store forenoon & evening came home & went to bed about 9, Rol Willson went to Naperville  Mrs Stone came here.

31st Monday  rather fine weather  I did my chaors was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with Sister.

September 1st Tuesday  rather a fine day for Sept  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with Sister  Daniel Kenyon set up all night & had 2 revolvers A wagon passed by & hitched at my store & three men came part way up the hill, one came up oposit Kenyons, the other two could not be seen, some one rattled the bedroom window Jose Helm sprang to the window & Kenyon with his revolver at the same time, soon after there was a quear smell which spread all over the house & came pretty near putting Kenyon to sleep he had to rais the window in the butry he looked bad, the house was clear of smell in 3 or 4 hours [in margin] Daniel Kenyon set up all night with a revolver in hand.

19th Friday  Some squalley & wet  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister & trouble.

20th Saturday  A cold cloudy disagreeable day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Rol Willson came here & stayed all night  Cals goslins sliped away about sunset & we could not find them [in margin] goslins ran away.

21st Sunday  A cold cloudy damp day  I did my choars was at the house all day came home about 9 and went to bed about 10 sick  Rol Willson was here till noon Caroline went to Naperville with Rol in afternoon.

22nd Monday  rather fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble & Sister.

23rd Tuesday  fine weather & a growing time  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick from trouble with Sister etc.

24th Wednesday  fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with trouble & Sister  Masons met at Aurora.”

5th Friday  rained some in forenoon cleared off in afternoon more pleasant  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with sister, Mrs Bliss got home from Association [in margin] George pretty tite on cider.

6th Saturday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

7th Sunday  A fine warm pleasant day  I did my choars was round the house all day a choaring went to the office in the evening came home & went to bed at 9 nearly sick  Rol Willson & Matta Gould called here a while & went home [in margin] Jo Ferry & wife were at D Kenyons.

8th Monday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the store all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out [in margin] Mrs Miner preached.

9th Tuesday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Caroline Willson & Eliza McNelly came from their father’s in Iowa last week & got here this morning  before 9, 10.

10th Wednesday  fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble.”

23rd Saturday  A fine warm day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister  I received a letter from Wm McNellys wife & Caroline today [in margin] A letter from Caroline & Ann.

24th Sunday  A fine hot day  I did my choars & went to the store came back & took my colt to Nick Collings, then choared round the house & fixed the fence & was at the store in evening came home & went to bed at 9, Mrs Stone went over the river, Mrs Gould came up with Adda.

25th Monday  A fine day & growing time  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble & Sister.

26th Tuesday  fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & sick & worne out with Sister.

30th Saturday  rather a fine day but some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick  Rol sheared sheep at Vandervolgen.

July 1st Sunday  A cloudy damp day & wet more or less all the forenoon was cloudy & damp in afternoon  I did my choars was at home all day a choaring round the garden & house went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & about sick  R Willson & Nelson Derry went to Coral, started in the rain [in margin] Rol Willson went to Coral after his things—Mrs Fredenhagen was taken down with small pox.

2nd Monday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick [in margin] Mrs Fredenhagen has got the small pox.

3rd Tuesday  fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.”

17th Thursday  A cool day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½.

18th Friday  A fine pleasant warm day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 went to bed at 9 ½ sick [in margin] Wheelock came to Willsons.

19th Saturday  A fine warm day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 8 ½ [in margin] Wheelock left Willsons.

20th Sunday  A fine pleasant windy day & cool evening  I did my choars went to office in morning came home & went to McNelly with Gould, got back at about 5 did my choars went to office & back & went to bed at 9 sick.

21st Monday  I put my colt in to Col Warrens paster  rather a fine cool day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely  H Brown is not expected to live from day to day.

22nd Tuesday  fine cold backward dry weather, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely.”

4th Friday  A cool pleasant day & evening all most cold enough at night to freeze, I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & lonely.

5th Saturday  A cold day & grew cold at night about cold enough to freeze  I did my choars was at the office all day and came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & tiard.

6th Sunday  A cold morning almost froz last night  A cold pleasant day & evening   I did my choars was at the house all day & evening went to the office about sunset came back & went to bed about 9 planted buternuts & Norway Spruce seed etc.

7th Monday rather fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & about sick & lonely.

24th Friday A fine pleasant day looks like Indian Summer I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed at 9 lonely & nearly sick.

25th Saturday A fine pleasant day some cold & some cloudy towards night & looks a little like a storm I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & nearly sick, John McNelly & John Smily came here at noon went up to house & got a lunch, they were down to mill & went home at 3 ½.

26th Sunday A fine pleasant day & evening I did my choars was at the office after breckfust H Gould came along about 9 ½ & we went over to McNellys got there between 11 & 12, stayed till about 3 ½ & came home got here a little before sunset saw Caroline a going & coming, I did my choars & went to bed about 8 ½ or 9 tiard, lonely & death & about sick.

27th Monday A fine pleasant day but some cloudy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed at 9 lonely & about sick.

28th Tuesday A stormey day snowed all day but was not cold, snow fell 3 or 4 inches stoped at night did not freeze much, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 lonely & about sick.

29th Wednesday A cloudy disagreeable day & night but did not freeze, the ground was covered with snow but went off conciderable I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 & went to bed at 9, tiard lonely as death & about sick [in margin] Nigly took the invoice of Mannings goods.”

27th Friday A cloudy misty disagreeable day & snowed several inches during the night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick dishartened and about discouraged.

28th Saturday Several inches of snow on the ground & a snowing looks conciderable like winter brooke away in forenoon a cold night & froze quite hard, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & sick.

29th Sunday A cold but more pleasant morning and day but froze quite hard last night I did my choars eat breckfust went to the office & back choared round the house picked some apples etc took my cold off to wean etc, a good deal like winter I went to bed about 8 ½ nearly sick dishartened & a lonely as one can be & about discouraged [in margin] a cold winterlike day.

30th Monday A cold cloudy disagreeable day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 & went to bed about 9 lonely & sick [in margin] Bostwick moved to Wheaton.

31st Tuesday A cold cloudy disagreeable day & night seemed like winter I did my choars was at office all day & evening & came home 8 bed 9.

November 1st Wednesday a cool cloudy disagreeable day I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 lonely Wm McNelly started for Iowa.”
