Hiram E. Leonard Diary, June 25 – July 1, 1868

25th Thursday  A fine cool day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard, sick & worne out with Sister.

26th Friday  A fine warme day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard sick & worne out with Sister  My cattle all got out of the paster in afternoon & the red cow got with Lahmans bull & took the bull.

27th Saturday  A fine hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

28th Sunday  A fine & verry hot day  I did my choars was round the house all day a choaring etc was at the store in forenoon & evening came home and went to bed at 9 nearly sick  Rolen carried Eliza over to Filers & left her.

29th Monday  fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

30th Tuesday  fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all [day] came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

July 1st Wednesday  fine hot weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick etc.”

29th Wednesday  rather a cloudy day with light showers  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.

30th Thursday  rather a cloudy showerery day & more warm  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick, Fry a thrashing at Lahmans.

31st Friday  A cloudy showerey day & warm  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick, thrashing at Lahmans.

September 1st Saturday  A cloudy damp day with a heavey shower in the morning which spoiled thrashing for all day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick with a soar throat  Fry set his machine here to thrash but the shower stopped him.

2nd Sunday  A little cloudy in the morning & foggy but cleared off & was a fine pleasant warm day with a fine cool air  I did my choars eat breckfust & went to the office about 9 ½ come back & went down at 10 ½ again, was round the house the most of the day a choaring, went to bed about 9.

3rd Monday  rather a fine day but cloudy some  I did my choars was at the store the most of the day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 tiard  an nearly sick with a cold  etc Rol Willson had the oats thrashed by Fry & I helped carry mine up stairs in the store we had 470 bushels [in margin] Fry thrashed the oats for Willson.

4th Tuesday  A cloudy rainey day & nasty  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.”

13th Wednesday  fine weather but cool but cool  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick  Schovel went to Naperville to carry some down to debate  he got throwed out & the horses ran a short distance but hurt no one but Schovel  [in margin] Schovel got throwed out of the carriage coming from Naperville.

14th Thursday  fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick  [in margin] Shool closed today.

15th Friday  rather fine weather but cool  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick  Caroline was quite sick last night & today.

16th Saturday  A pretty cool day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ or ten tiard lonely & sick  Sister was sick & I had to go to store after I came up the s_______ meeting commenced to Lahmans today this afternoon & tonight & tomorrow.

17th Sunday  rather a fine cool & some cloudy forenoon & some showerey in afternoon  I did my choars went office came back & was round home till night a hoeing & choaring round writing etc & went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & sick  meeting at Lahmans.

18th Monday  rather fine weather but cool a cold night  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick & homesick.

19th Tuesday  rather fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick [in margin] my cow went to bull.”

8th Thursday A fine day but hot & verry dry I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

9th Friday A cloudy morning & a heavy shower about 8 with several heavey showers during the day one between 5 & 6 ½ a great deal of rain fell a Big Woods & injured their crops verry much in places, I did my choars was at the office all day came home 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely Eli Root & family F Pollards brother in law from Vermont came tonight his wife was paralyzed on one sided, sent for Danne Camp meeting near St Charles.

10th Saturday A fine cool day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard lonely & nearly sick, Dr. Waterman Allen Wright & Fairbanks came home to stay over Sunday & go back next week to Chicago to be mustered out big meeting commenced at Lahmans.

11th Sunday A fine pleasant growing day I did my choars was at the home all day went to office towards night came back & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & about sick there was a great meeting at Lahmans Sister went both days Redfield had a camp meeting near St Charles many went.

12th Monday rather fine hot weather ground wet & crops grow I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely.

13th Tuesday fine weather with showers things grow I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick & lonely.

14th Wednesday fine hot growing weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard sick, lonely, Kate Chandler had a son born today, Richard Chandlers wife.”

“2nd Thursday A fine day but cool I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 9 ½ & went to bed tiard & nearly sick & lonely as can be [in margin] Dr H S. Potter was killed by a bounding shell a strikeing him in the head.

“3rd Friday A fine day for June but cool. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard loanly & nearly sick [in margin] Bolway brought pigs.

“4th Saturday A fine pleasant warm day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ or started & met Malissa Billings saying that Mr Hoyt was a dyeing went up & he was ded died very sudden, Jonathan Pollard H D Fowler was there & Beardsley helped us lay him out the house was full we stayed till 11 ½ & locked him up & came home & went to bed he died between 8 & 9 evening.

“5th Sunday A fine day but some cloudy. I did my choars was at Mr Hoyts about 9, a while choared round some came home about noon went up to Caroline Wrays about 2 & stayed till about 4 or 5 George & Elizabeth went up in forenoon & Rollen brought us back I found my cow the other side of Lahmans & turned her into Lahmans yard with his bull came home did my choars went to the office & round home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 nearly sick lonesome & down spirited.

“6th Monday rather fine cold weather for June, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely. James Hoyt got here about one oclock at night & eat a bit & went to bed with Charles & me.

“7th Tuesday A fine but cool day for the season. I did my choars was at the office the most of the day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ sick & lonely. Mr. Hoyts funeral was today at the Methodist Church.

“8th Wednesday rather fine cool dry weather. I did my choars was at the office all day or nearly, went to Hoyts & red the Will of Hoyts to the Heirs was at office in evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard nearly sick lonesome & lonely.”
