Hiram E. Leonard Diary, December 10 – 16, 1868

10th Thursday  fine cold winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

11th Friday  A fine cold winter day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick [in margin] Rolen went to Kenyon.

12th Saturday  A fine winter day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out  Jerry & Resseguie killed a heffer for me & McGee came and stayed at Perry over Sunday.

13th Sunday  A fine winter day & spit snow the most of the day  I did my choars was at the house a choaring round went to the office about noon & called at Kenyons was at office in evening came home & went to bed at 9.

14th Monday  fine winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

15th Tuesday a fine winter day & good sleighing  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  Resseguies & Rogers cut & drew wood for me & Jerry Dady chopped for me in woods.

16th Wednesday  fine sleighing & winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  Resseguies & Rogers drew wood for me all day from wood 4 loads each.”

3rd Thursday  A fine day with a cool air  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Rolen Caroline & Eliza went to Aurora, Resseguie carried them.

4th Friday  A snowey morning & snowed the most of the day  snow to the depth of 6 or 8 inches  I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out  Mrs Stone went up to Owens.

5th Saturday  rather a fine day & pretty good sleighing  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½.

6th Sunday  A fine day but cloudy  I did my choars was at the house a choaring round the most of the day went to the office about 1 for Jerry Pollard fixed my howell some, went to office in evening came home 7 went to bed at 9 nearly sick & worne out with trouble & Sister  Caroline, Eliza & Wallace went to hear a man speak.

7th Monday  A fine winter day I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick.

8th Tuesday  fine cold winter weather with 10 inches of snow on the ground  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister.

9th Wednesday  cold winter weather, I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.”

14th Friday  fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ worne out with trouble & nearly sick.

15th Saturday  A fine pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

16th Sunday  A fine pleasant with a cool air  I did my choars was round the house the most of the day & fixed a box for the gees to drink in was at the office twice & went to bed at about 9  one goslin had got out & left & we hunted for it & Jerry Pollard brought him [in margin] goslin got out & went to Jerry Pollards.

17th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard worne out with trouble  [in margin] Rol went off a selling rights.

18th Tuesday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out  [in margin] Naperville & Wheaton folks met at Elgin to see about the County Seat & adjourned.

19th Wednesday  fine weather for Aug.  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  Rol got back from selling rights.”

11th Wednesday  a cloudy misty morning & day & snowed some in afternoon & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  The Jerrys Pollard & Dady killed my hogs one weighed 357 the 360#.

12th Thursday  A fine day for winter  I did my choars was at the office all day came home before 8 cut up my hogs & went to bed about 11 or after nearly sick and worne out with trouble.

13th Friday  fine winter weather & cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & salted some pork & went to bed at 10 ½.

14th Saturday  A cloudy winter day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 & finished salting my pork & went to bed at about 10 tiard & nearly sick with trouble, Sister is verry worrysome [in margin] Fairbanks had his leg operated on.

15th Sunday  cloudy & snowed a little not verry cold  I did my choars was at the house the most of the day a choaring round went to the office 3 times, was at home in evening wrote some & went to bed about 9 nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Mrs Stone went to meeting at 10 ½ & in the evening H Gould & family were here at supper & Elizer Stone, Rol Willson called.

16th Monday  fine winter weather with a  little snow  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 & went to bed at  9 ½.

17th Tuesday  fine winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

22nd Thursday rather a fine rainey day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

23rd Friday A fine thawey day & grew cool in evening I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

24th Saturday rather a cool day & a growing cool I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick Frank Willson was here [in margin] Jerry & Jon Pollard went to Chicago about Jones farm.

25th Sunday A cold morning Mercury stood in the thurmometer at 4 degrees below zero a cold day, thurmometer at noon 8 degrees above zero I did my choars went to the office about 10 ½ came back & choared round the house wrote some etc all day went to office in evening came back & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & nearly sick clouded up som in afternoon.

26th Monday rather a fine day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.

27th Tuesday fine winter weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

28th Wednesday fine thawey weather snow a going fast I did my choars was at the office all day, came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & sick & lonely.”

16th Thursday rather a cloudy disagreeable day & very muddy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ sick Jerry Pollard carried the mail, G O Potter came from Kankakee to Winfield & had to stay to Hixes all night.

17th Friday rather more pleasant & cool froz some came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 nearly sick G O Potter came down from Winfield with Jerry Pollard got here before noon [in margin] G O Potter & wife got at my house.

18th Saturday rather a fine day but cloudy I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 9 & went to bed about 10 nearly sick.

19th Sunday a most beautiful day for March I did my choars was at the office in morning came home about 9 choared round the most of the day went the office in the evening & made up the mail came back at 7, wrote some & went to bed at 9 sick.

20th Monday fine weather for the season I did my choars was at the office all day and evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely as death.

21st Tuesday rather fine weather for the season I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick.

22nd Wednesday rather fine weather for the season some cold I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick.”

“3rd Thursday rather fine weather but some cloudy. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

“4th Friday rather a fine day & a cold night cloudy day & clear night, I did my choars was at the office all day 7 till 6 ½ in evening then went to Methodist church to hear Cody make a political speech went home about ½ past 9 & soon went to bed nearly sick.

“5th Saturday A fine pleasant beautiful day for Nov. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick [in margin] Mrs Stowels husband came home at night.

“6th Sunday rather a fine morning but a cloudy day with squalls of rain a most all day rather a hard day. I did my choars was at the house most of the day choaring round & fixing corn crib, went to office about noon came back wrote some in evening & went to bed about 9 tiard & lonely Charles went to Carolines to got to go to her father but did not go Tom Pelham was married to Mrs Ellin or Hellin York today by Elder Ofield at Downers Grove.

“7th Monday rather a cloudy damp day. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick & lonely [in margin] Caroline went to her fathers.

“8th Tuesday rather a cool cloudy damp & some misty day. I did my choars was at the office till about one oclock when I came up & went to election with Jerry Pollard came back between 3 & 4 went to the store came home eat supper & went back came home 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick it mist a little in evening & rained before morning, A Lincoln got 180 majority over McLellen, McLellen had 58 or 59 a pretty still election.

25th Tuesday  rather a fine day but cool.  I did my choars was at home all day, at office in the evening, came home about 9 & soon went to bed Jerry Pollard helped me all day to fix my cistern & put a stone on it weighing 6500, Wm McNellys girl was here & her father Elib Potter went back to Boyds.”
