Hiram E. Leonard Diary, August 7 – 13, 1867

7th Wednesday  fine weather & hot  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worne out.

8th Thursday  A fine pleasant hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Resseguie stack the first part of my oats, Charles R Leonard got here from New Lebanon at noon.

9th Friday  a fine forenoon but several showers in the afternoon  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick.

10th Saturday  A pretty fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick  Charles went to Naperville in forenoon & to Carpenters in the afternoon with Mrs Bliss & got back in the evening [in margin] R B Pollard got home tonight.

11th Sunday  A fine cool pleasant day with some clouds  I did my choars went to office with Charles & back choared round the house some & laid down in the middle of day & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick  Dr Charles Estes & wife & daughter were here after supper & stayed a short time with Mrs Bliss, they with Carpenters folks were at Bliss to tea  Charles went & stayed to Carpenters over night.

12th Monday  rather a fine day with a shower in afternoon or several showers  I was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick, Charles Leonard went to Aurora with Mrs Bliss & got home after dark  they went to P. Carpenters & took supper.

13th Tuesday  A cloudy muddy morning but more pleasant in afternoon I did my choars was at the office in the morning & got ready & started for Batavia with my sister about 10 oclock  got there at noon & got back at 3 P.M. was at the store the rest of the day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worne out with trouble [in margin] I took Sister to the Insane hospital at Batavia.”

17th Wednesday  fine hay weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick, Resseguie stacked part of a stack of hay nearly my share of half the orchard, he stacked tomorrow.

18th Thursday  a fine day for haying  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick Resseguie stacked nearly my share of hay what grew on half of the orchard the rest he mowed.

19th Friday  A cloudy & some showerey day bad hay day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard & nearly sick with trouble  Sister is verry troublesome.

20th Saturday  A fine day for haying  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8-3/4 & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with trouble [in margin] stacked rest of orchard, Col went to Chicago.

21st Sunday  A beautiful warm day clear & pleasant  I did my choars eat breckfust went to office with George about 9 ½ George picked him out pants & vest & we came home & called at Grants a short time came home & choared round the house & went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

22nd Monday  fine hay weather but hot  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worn out with trouble.

23rd Tuesday  A fine hot day thurmometer at 100  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick.”

3rd Wednesday  A cloudy damp day with showers  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly worn out with trouble.

4th Thursday rather a warm day & cloudy not verry fine for the 4th I did my choars was at the office came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick [in margin] a still Fourth.

5th Friday  rather a cloudy showerey day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 sick & worn out with trouble.

6th Saturday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 10 sick & sorrowful.

7th Sunday  rather a fine cool day with some clouds  I did my choars was at the office about 9, came home choared round the house was about sick & went to bed about 10 & lay till near 2, fixed fence some etc  Sister was verry troublesome, Caroline called & eat supper, Mrs Stone went to C Owens  I did my choars & went to bed about 9 sick.

26th Wednesday  A cloudy damp day & sprinkled a little   I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly worn out with sister  Thomas Boyd & Louisa Kenyon were married at Naperville this forenoon by __________.

27th Thursday  A pretty fine but some cloudy day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick etc.

28th Friday  rather a fine growing day, I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worn out, My cow was with the bull.

29th Saturday  A fine warm pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 sick & lonely.

30th Sunday  A fine warm day with a cool air  I did my choars was at the office about 10 came back & fixed my well roller & was at home all day & went to bed at 9.

July 1st Monday  A fine warm day some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard lonely & about sick  George W Shaffer was taken for forgery.

2nd Tuesday  A fine growing day with showers I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick with trouble.”

20th Thursday  fine dry warm weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & discouraged  shower in morning [in margin] Meeting in the grove for the school  Mrs Carlton or Shaffer an abortion.

21st Friday  A fine day but some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 10 nearly sick too.

22nd Saturday  A fine day some cloudy & showers in the north & west & a tremendious heavey shower in evening with hail rain & hard winds & tedious night  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick.

23rd Sunday  A cloudy damp day & some showers  I did my choars was at the store about 10 came back & choared round the house etc came home and went to bed about 9 nearly sick with a cold.

24th Monday  A fine growing day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worn out with trouble.

25th Tuesday  A fine pleasant day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worn out with trouble.”

12th Wednesday  fine weather for corn & grain  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worn out with sister.

13th Thursday  fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 9 ½ & went to to bed at 10 nearly sick & worne out  The sherriff served the papers on the Supervisors to stop the county seet proceeding [in margin] Franck grave me a plowing.

14th Friday  fine hot growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worned out with sister She worrys so much.

15th Saturday  A fine hot growing day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home a little after 9 & went to bed about 10 sick & worne out with sister, Mrs Stone went to Doc Waterman & I fastened up the house except the north door, She came & found the back door fastened & did not come to the north door, & supposed I had fastened all the doors & she went to Barkers & stayed all night.

16th Sunday  A fine warm pleasant day & a getting dry  I did my choars went to the office about 8 & came back choared round the house, fixed my paster fence some wrote some, took a nap etc I went to bed about 9 nearly sick  Sister is verry troublesome.

17th Monday  fine pleasant dry weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worn out with sister.

18th Tuesday a fine pleasant day things grow  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10, nearly sick & worne out.”

8th Wednesday  A cloudy damp day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard and about sick— Geroge Sidwell came back from Rockford & went to the saloon & stayed overnight, German’s brother knocked George out of bed & knocked bothe of his eyes pretty bad so that they were black for over a week & pretty bad [in margin] George got pounded over to Germans tonight.

9th Thursday  Rather a fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick, George came to the store with both of his eyes blacked about 4 ½ & came up to the house with mrs Germans brother struck him [in margin] Wizard King performed at basement  rained in night.

10th Friday  A fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick  Rol Willson stacked one stack of oats the rest lay on the ground, the Wizard King performed.

11th Saturday  A streddy rainey day & night, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home before 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & sick.

12th Sunday A cloudy damp morning & cloudy day but the sun shone some I did my choars went to the office & back about 3 or 4 times, choared round some fixed fence some etc went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & sick George was here with black eyes.

13th Monday  rather a fine day but some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ about sick.

14th Tuesday rather cloudy & a light shower towards night, rained hard at John Warnes  I did my choars was at the office all day came home 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ nearly sick.”

11th Wednesday  a verry hot dry day  thurmometer stood at 100 in middle of day verry dry  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

12th Thursday  A fine hot dry day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ sick thurmometer at 100.

13th Friday  fine hot weather  thurmometer at 100  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

14th Saturday  A fine hot day  thurmometer stood 100  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & lonely  G Sidwell left today he left Fredenhagan.

15th Sunday  A fine hot day with a good air thurmometer about as yesterday  I did my choars was at the house all day & evening went to bed 9 tiard & about sick thurmometer about as yesterday I choared round [in margin] George Sidwell left Fredenhagans yesterday night.

16th Monday  rather a fine hot day & evening thurmometer at 101  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & sick.

17th Tuesday  fine hot weather with a shower  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick [in margin] G Sidwell went back to Fredenhagans.”

13th Wednesday  fine weather but cool but cool  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick  Schovel went to Naperville to carry some down to debate  he got throwed out & the horses ran a short distance but hurt no one but Schovel  [in margin] Schovel got throwed out of the carriage coming from Naperville.

14th Thursday  fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick  [in margin] Shool closed today.

15th Friday  rather fine weather but cool  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & sick  Caroline was quite sick last night & today.

16th Saturday  A pretty cool day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ or ten tiard lonely & sick  Sister was sick & I had to go to store after I came up the s_______ meeting commenced to Lahmans today this afternoon & tonight & tomorrow.

17th Sunday  rather a fine cool & some cloudy forenoon & some showerey in afternoon  I did my choars went office came back & was round home till night a hoeing & choaring round writing etc & went to bed at 9 tiard lonely & sick  meeting at Lahmans.

18th Monday  rather fine weather but cool a cold night  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick & homesick.

19th Tuesday  rather fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick [in margin] my cow went to bull.”
