Hiram E. Leonard Diary, September 24 – 30, 1868

24th Thursday  rather cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister.

25th Friday  rather fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

26th Saturday  cloudy damp weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

27th Sunday  cloudy damp weather & windy  I did my choars was at the office in forenoon 2 times, was at the house the most of the day a choaring round cleaned out the Back house was at office in evening came home & went to bed 9  Griffeth called here.

28th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly worne out with trouble of Sister.

29th Tuesday  fine weather for Sept but cool  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly worne out with trouble [in margin] Rolen went with Dasenbruch.

30th Wednesday  Some cloudy & damp had rained some  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ worne out with trouble.”

18th Wednesday  a fine winter day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½  & went to bed at 9 ½ worne out with trouble.

19th Thursday  fine weather for winter  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick and worne out with my sister & trouble.

20th Friday  A fine pleasant warm day with winter  I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick etc.

21st Saturday  A stormey squalley rainey day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick and worne out with trouble  William Scott died at Griffeths tonight.

22nd Sunday  A pleasant day but very windy  I did my choars went to the office, came back  & choared round the house the most of the day went to the office 4 times wrote some in the evening & went to bed about 9 tiard and about worne out with trouble  P Graves sliped down on the ice & was found senceless near the meeting house & was carried into Mr Hudsons hurd pretty bad.

23rd Monday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble  [in margin] George Sidwell came back from Canada.

24th Tuesday  fine winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard, sick & worne out with the trouble of Sister.”

June 1st Thursday fine dry hot pleasant weather everything a suffering with the drouth & adrying up I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick I had a letter from George O Potter they wrote one to Caroline & 1 to Griffeth.

2nd Friday hot & dry as usual, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick, Mr Scowel got home from the Army, Caroline Wray came to Russequies in stage.

3rd Saturday fine hot dry weather everything a drying up I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick, Caroline Wray called at the office before noon & went to Willsons in afternoon & stayed all night, Rolla was with her [in margin] Mrs L Kenyon came to Lanes.

4th Sunday A fine pleasant hot day & evening & everything a drying up I did my choars was at office after breckfust came back & called at Lanes Lewey Kenyon was there I was at home the most of the day a choaring round & went to bed about 9, Boyd came after L Kenyon just at night [in margin] L Kenyon went home R Willson carried Cal Wray home.

5th Monday fine hot dry day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick tiard & lonely.

6th Tuesday a fine day but dry & hot I did my choars was at the office all day & evening, came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick, but lonely.

7th Wednesday fine hot dry weather crops a suffering I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & worse than sick.”

17th Thursday fine cold tedious weather for March. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ by Hoyts & went to bed at 9 ½ sick lonely [in margin] George went to Griffeths.

18th Friday  cold & some cloudy & rough. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home by Hoyts at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ lonely & sick.

19th Saturday A rough windy day for March & cold. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ by Hoyts & went to bed about 9 ½ lonesome & sick.

20th Sunday  A fine pleasant day but cool. I did my choars was at home the most of the day a choaring round & visiting called at the office twice & called at Hoyts & in evening came home at 7 ½ wrote some and went to bed about 8 ½ or 9, lonesome & nearly sick. H Gould & family came here & went & got Caroline down here & stayed till about 4 Hant left Car went with Rollen about 5 oclock Roll had a letter from Doc Potter to have him come down there.

21st Monday  rather cold disagreeable weather for March. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiared loneseome & nearly sick ground froze yet.

22nd Tuesday  rather cold backwards weather for March. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed lonesome tiard & nearly sick.

23rd Wednesday  rather cool raw weather for the season & the ground frozen I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ lonesome & nearly sick.”

3rd Wednesday  rather fine winter weather but some cloudy & muddy. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ about sick with a cold.

4th Thursday  rather fine weather for winter but warm & muddy I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening, came home about 8 ½ by Hoyts & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick. Samuel Griffeth died at Camp Butler this morning.

5th Friday  rather fine weather for winter but muddy. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick with a  cold—-.

6th Saturday  rather a fine day for the season but warm & muddy. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick, R Griffeth got a telegraphic dispatch from Springfield that Sam Griffeth was ded he died at Camp Butler on the 4th of Feb.

7th Sunday A fine warm day for Feb. but some cloudy & muddy, more pleasant towards night, I did my choars cleaned out the hovels called at Mr Hoyts a few minutes in forenoon was round home the most of the day & evening went to the office towards night came back wrote some & went to bed about 9.

8th Monday  A fine pleasant day for winter & a getting to be pretty good going. I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick with a cold [in margin] John Grant left for Memphis.

9th Tuesday  rather fine weather for winter, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold. Wm Griffeth started for Springfield to Camp Butler to get Sam Griffeths boddy who died last Thursday.”

Hiram E. Leonard Diary, October 28 – November 3, 1863

28th Wednesday  a fine pleasant day but cool cloudy evening & rained before morning, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick, John Duck & M D Williams came from Elgin got here about dusk after Ws goods.

29th Thursday  A cloudy damp morning & began to rain about 8, wet conciderable in forenoon & hard in afternoon & evening & snowed some before morning. I did my choars was at the office till after 9 then went to Germy to get an attachment for M D Williams goods, Germn made the papers out & came down about one & did not like to give them to the constable, So I started for Naperville a little after one with R. Pollard & got my papers & got back before 4, Williams started for Elgin & we went to Fowlers & attached M D W. goods came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

30th Friday  rather a cloudy disagreeable day & spit snow a little & snowed during the night conciderable. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick. M D Williams got back at noon, & was a going to law me & make me smart, he shook his fist in my face & called me a liar & said it should be to my injury he sent P Graves over to talk with me in the evening & he agreed to settle it in the morning which he did.

31st Saturday  the ground was covered with snow, but conciderable of it went off before night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 nearly sick, P Graves settled Williams notes paid $50, gave a notice of 34.80 & they went home.

November 1st Sunday  rather a cold morning but a fine pleasant day & evening quite warm in the middle of the day, I did my choars & choared round the house till near noon then went to store & got some curtains came back & choared round till ½ past one then started for my timber to show Dutchman where to chop got back about 4 did my choars was at home all evening wrote some & went to bed a little after 8 nearly sick with a cold. B S Harlow Esqr died today after being sick a few weeks.

2nd Monday  rather a cool cloudy damp day & rained some. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed a little after 9 nearly sick with a  cold.

3rd Tuesday  A cool but rather pleasant day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick. B. S Harlow Esqr was burried today in afternoon & election was at Garys Mill today, Grifffeth drew a load apples.”

16th Wednesday  rather fine cloudy weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 1/2 & went to bed about 9 ½.

17th Thursday  rather fine cloudy day & rained some during night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.

18th Friday  rather a cloudy damp morning & cool cloudy day & cold evening froze during night, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold, a very cold night for Sept.

19th Saturday  A cold & some cloudy morning with a heavey frost and water froze in a pool thicker than window glass last night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½.

20th Sunday  A cold cloudy morning, I think there was no frost. I got up about 7, did my choars went to the office & Hoyts came home at 10, choared round the house, the most of the day, H. Gould & family came along about 11 & went to Cals. Elizabeth went to Griffeths about 11 ½, Guy Lewins, wife & Charly came 12 ¼ & went to Griffeths, came back & stayed a while & went home, I called at Hoyts in evening came home at 8, & went to bed about 9, Gould came back & stayed till nearly 4 Caroline came with them, Hat & Eliza McNelly came about 12 ½ & stayed till after supper, Hot Eliza & Caroline were off together.

21st Monday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at about 9 ½.

22nd Tuesday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at about 9 ½.”

1st Wednesday  A fine hot day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening a making out my P.O returns came home at 8 ½ & soon went to bed.

2nd Thursday  A fine day but dry & hot, I did my choars was at the office all day, finished making out my returns came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½. Caroline came home at noon & Elizabeth went to Griffeths between 6 & 7, to stay over night.

3rd Friday  A fine hot dry day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½.  J B Pollard came out to.

4th Saturday  a fine hot day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 9 by Hoyts & went to bed about 10 Caroline went to St. Charles with Rol Willson & got back at 1 oclock to __________ Murry Shorm & wife were here.

5th Sunday  A fine hot day & evening. I did my choars was at the house a picking cherry the most of the day went to office about 10 came back tuk a nap about one & picked cherry before & after Caroline & Roll went her Fathers & got home after 9 & went to bed between 9 & 10.

6th Monday  rather fine dry hot weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

7th Tuesday  A fine dry hot day the ground a getting verry dry. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”
