Hiram E. Leonard Diary, December 18 – 24, 1867

18th Wednesday  a fine winter day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½  & went to bed at 9 ½ worne out with trouble.

19th Thursday  fine weather for winter  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick and worne out with my sister & trouble.

20th Friday  A fine pleasant warm day with winter  I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick etc.

21st Saturday  A stormey squalley rainey day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick and worne out with trouble  William Scott died at Griffeths tonight.

22nd Sunday  A pleasant day but very windy  I did my choars went to the office, came back  & choared round the house the most of the day went to the office 4 times wrote some in the evening & went to bed about 9 tiard and about worne out with trouble  P Graves sliped down on the ice & was found senceless near the meeting house & was carried into Mr Hudsons hurd pretty bad.

23rd Monday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble  [in margin] George Sidwell came back from Canada.

24th Tuesday  fine winter weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard, sick & worne out with the trouble of Sister.”

28th Wednesday rather a cold raw disagreeable day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & lonely sunset cloudy.

29th Thursday A fine pleasant day with a cool air I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & about sick & lonely as death [in margin] sunset clear.

30th Friday A cold raw cloudy disagreeable day & night I did my chaors was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick B C Williams & wife came from Chicago & stoped at F Pollard Wm Wright & wife were at Watermans, Wright came the first I saw him since they were married [in margin] Sunset in a cloud.

31st Saturday A fine pleasant day cloudy at night the snow run finely I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ about sick & homesick froze but little tonight.

April 1st Sunday A fine pleasant warm day & evening sun shone warm but rather a cool air I did my choars was round the house all day except going to the office toward night I was about sick I had the rheumatism or crick through my hips & back so that I could hardly do my choars & had to sit in the house a most all day fixed the mail at office in evening came back & went to bed at about 9 nearly sick & home sick had the rheumatism [in margin] Mrs Lela Potter stayed all night.

2nd Monday Mathers ded tonight rather a fine day but cool & verry muddy I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

3rd Tuesday rather a fine day but some cloudy & verry muddy bad going I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick Town meeting today A C Graves elected Supervisor Jonathan Pollard who was beaten Germane & a Mr Ketshum justices of the Peace.”

24th Wednesday  A fine pleasant day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

25th Thursday A fine pleasant day for Feb or April I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

26th Friday  rather a cloudy day but not bad till near night & began to rain in the evening was a rainey night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick. Capt Graves came from Nashville by way of Springfield & got home.

27th Saturday  A damp cloudy morning & misty day grew more cool at night & froze hard during the night. I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 7 ½ by Hoyts got home & went to bed about 8 ½ nearly sick & home sick—-.

28th Sunday  A cold cloudy morning & day but grew more pleasant I did my choars was at home a choaring round the most of the day went to the office towards night & came back by Hoyts home about 7 ½ & went to bed before 9 nearly sick & lonesome.

29th Monday  rather fine weather for winter. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

March 1st Tuesday  fine weather for March. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

2nd Wednesday  fine weather I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.”

Hiram E. Leonard Diary, October 28 – November 3, 1863

28th Wednesday  a fine pleasant day but cool cloudy evening & rained before morning, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick, John Duck & M D Williams came from Elgin got here about dusk after Ws goods.

29th Thursday  A cloudy damp morning & began to rain about 8, wet conciderable in forenoon & hard in afternoon & evening & snowed some before morning. I did my choars was at the office till after 9 then went to Germy to get an attachment for M D Williams goods, Germn made the papers out & came down about one & did not like to give them to the constable, So I started for Naperville a little after one with R. Pollard & got my papers & got back before 4, Williams started for Elgin & we went to Fowlers & attached M D W. goods came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

30th Friday  rather a cloudy disagreeable day & spit snow a little & snowed during the night conciderable. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick. M D Williams got back at noon, & was a going to law me & make me smart, he shook his fist in my face & called me a liar & said it should be to my injury he sent P Graves over to talk with me in the evening & he agreed to settle it in the morning which he did.

31st Saturday  the ground was covered with snow, but conciderable of it went off before night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 nearly sick, P Graves settled Williams notes paid $50, gave a notice of 34.80 & they went home.

November 1st Sunday  rather a cold morning but a fine pleasant day & evening quite warm in the middle of the day, I did my choars & choared round the house till near noon then went to store & got some curtains came back & choared round till ½ past one then started for my timber to show Dutchman where to chop got back about 4 did my choars was at home all evening wrote some & went to bed a little after 8 nearly sick with a cold. B S Harlow Esqr died today after being sick a few weeks.

2nd Monday  rather a cool cloudy damp day & rained some. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed a little after 9 nearly sick with a  cold.

3rd Tuesday  A cool but rather pleasant day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick. B. S Harlow Esqr was burried today in afternoon & election was at Garys Mill today, Grifffeth drew a load apples.”

6th Wednesday  A cold morning with snow on the ground & water frozen a little I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½.

7th Thursday  rather more pleasant & growing warmer I did my choars was at the office all day & eve came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

8th Friday  rather a fine day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & eve came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½. Wm Wray got home when stage came 11 ½ (I did my choars eves) [in margin] Wm Wray got home on furlow.

9th Saturday  rather a fine warm day, I did my choars was at the office all day packed things for soldiers afternoon came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½, Mr McNelly & wife were here & went back at 4.

10th Sunday  some cloudy in morning but fine warm day, I did my choars was at the office till near noon fixing box & ________ & marking box for soldiers came home fixed fence worked in garden etc wrote some was at Hoyts in day & evening came home & went to bed at about 9 Will & Roll went to see Graves.

11th Monday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½.

12th Tuesday  fine weather for May. I did my choars was the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick went to McNellys.”

22nd Wednesday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 –.

23rd Thursday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & in evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about—H S Potter started back to the Army Lieut Peasly got home from the Army.

24th Friday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9. Capt A.C. Graves got home from Galatin.

25th Saturday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9–tiard & nearly sick. Heifer calved.

26th Sunday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at home all day a choaring round & set out willow etc a part of the day, Frank was here, Potter & Deckert had cider was at store & Hoyts in evening came here 8 ½ & went to bed at 9.

27th Monday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick.

28th Tuesday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed a little after 9 nearly sick rained some.”

14th Thursday  bad weather for harvesting.  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came by Hoyts about 8 and got home about 9 & soon went to bed tiard & nearly sick.  A C Graves company elected officers.”
