Hiram E. Leonard Diary, September 10 – 16, 1868

10th Thursday  rather fine some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble [in margin] Eliza went home with Barrus.

11th Friday  rather a rainey day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly worne out with trouble.

12th Saturday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

13th Sunday  A fine cool pleasant day  I did my choars went to the office & back choared round the house went to office in the evening came home & went to bed at 9 nearly sick  Ben Hoath called to see Eliza & she was over to Filers.

14th Monday  rather fine weather for Sept. I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble of Sister.

15th Tuesday  A fine day for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister [in margin] Wheaton fair commenced today.

16th Wednesday  fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister  Ben & Eliza went to the Fair & back & then to the Ball at Wheaton in evening & to his fathers to stay over night.”

27th Thursday  A fine hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Crosier thrashed on mine they had 576 bushels of oats & 13 ½ bush wheat.

28th Friday  A fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 10 tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble & sister  George McCauley from lotts creek came here at 11 & stayed all night, he wanted Eliza McNelly to go back with him Kenyon went to Aurora & got a revolver [in margin] Caroline sick.

29th Saturday  A fine day but sprinkled a little in the forenoon & was clouds  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly worne out with Sister, Mc Cauley started about 12 to go back to Iowa without Eliza but she wanted to go  Mooved to Aurora  [in margin] Caroline sick  McCuly started __________.

30th Sunday  A fine day but rather cloudy  I did my choars was round the house the most of the day went to store forenoon & evening came home & went to bed about 9, Rol Willson went to Naperville  Mrs Stone came here.

31st Monday  rather fine weather  I did my chaors was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with Sister.

September 1st Tuesday  rather a fine day for Sept  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with Sister  Daniel Kenyon set up all night & had 2 revolvers A wagon passed by & hitched at my store & three men came part way up the hill, one came up oposit Kenyons, the other two could not be seen, some one rattled the bedroom window Jose Helm sprang to the window & Kenyon with his revolver at the same time, soon after there was a quear smell which spread all over the house & came pretty near putting Kenyon to sleep he had to rais the window in the butry he looked bad, the house was clear of smell in 3 or 4 hours [in margin] Daniel Kenyon set up all night with a revolver in hand.

2nd Wednesday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister.”

20th Thursday rained some but fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out with trouble.

21st Friday a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  [in margin] Naperville & Wheaton folks met to see about County Seat again.

22nd Saturday  A fine day for Aug  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ & R B Pollard came & I got up & went to the store came back after ten & went to bed sick Judges Willcox & Murphy desided at that the County Seat was at Naperville as long as the Suits were untryed.

23rd Sunday  A fine pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office after breckfust & came back was round home all day a choaring etc went to office at night came back & went to bed at 9 nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

24th Monday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble & sister.

25th Tuesday  fine weather for Aug  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick with trouble & sister.

26th Wednesday  A fine pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister etc.”

14th Friday  fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ worne out with trouble & nearly sick.

15th Saturday  A fine pleasant day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

16th Sunday  A fine pleasant with a cool air  I did my choars was round the house the most of the day & fixed a box for the gees to drink in was at the office twice & went to bed at about 9  one goslin had got out & left & we hunted for it & Jerry Pollard brought him [in margin] goslin got out & went to Jerry Pollards.

17th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard worne out with trouble  [in margin] Rol went off a selling rights.

18th Tuesday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out  [in margin] Naperville & Wheaton folks met at Elgin to see about the County Seat & adjourned.

19th Wednesday  fine weather for Aug.  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  Rol got back from selling rights.”

7th Friday  rather damp hay weather a shower last night  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out with trouble.

8th Saturday  verry windy & cool  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out with trouble  R B Pollard got home from Chicago.

9th Sunday  A cool cloudy morning but more pleasant during the day  I did my choars was at the house the most of the day a choaring round & fixing fence etc went to the office in forenoon & in afternoon & went to bed about 9 nearly sick [in margin] Ben Horth carried Elizabeth to Holmes.

10th Monday  rather fine weather but rained a little  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble my cows got through Garys fence into his field & he set the dogs & boys ahorseback & run them so that it nearly killed my old cow, and dryed them up so that the old cow gave but a pint at a milking for three or four days & gave not more than a tea cup full at one milking  [in margin] J P Garys dogs & boys run my cows so that it nearly dryed them up.

18th Saturday  A fine hot day with a fine shower  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble [in margin] Wm Griffith & Mary Williams were married today Col Warren got home from N Y & Washington.

19th Sunday  A fine warm day & hot in the middle cool towards night was some cloudy I did my choars was round the house all day fixed calf pen etc was at office twice & went to bed about 9 nearly sick Benjamin Hoath came about 5 & road out with Eliza.

20th Monday  A fine hot dry day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

21st Tuesday  fine hot dry weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard sick & worne out with trouble of Sister.

22nd Wednesday  fine hot dry weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick & worne out with Sister  heifer went to bull.”

10th Friday  A fine hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with trouble with Sister [in margin] Rol got ________ from Wite.

11th Saturday  a fine hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard & worne out with trouble & Sister.

12th Sunday  A fine hot growing day  I did my choars was at the house the most of the day went to the office at noon & in evening & went to bed at 9 nearly sick [in margin] Ben Hoath was here.

13th Monday  A fine hot day about 100 degrees above zero  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly worne out [in margin] thermometer ranged all this week at from 98 to 105 degrees above zero & many died with heat etc.

14th Tuesday  A verry hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble of Sister.

15th Wednesday  fine hot weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble [in margin] Ben Hoath brought Eliza home about 11 at night.”

4th Saturday  A fine hot day  I did my choars was at the office all [day] came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 10 nearly sick & worned out, selebration at Wheaton & Aurora, Some one way & some the other way, Rol & Cal went to Wheaton.

5th Sunday  rather a fine hot day  some cloudy in afternoon & rained some about 4 I did my choars called at the office about 9 & in evening came home & went to bed at about 9 about sick  I picked some cherrys & choared round.

6th Monday  fine hot weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & worne out with Sister.

27th Saturday  A fine hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

28th Sunday  A fine & verry hot day  I did my choars was round the house all day a choaring etc was at the store in forenoon & evening came home and went to bed at 9 nearly sick  Rolen carried Eliza over to Filers & left her.

29th Monday  fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble.

20th Saturday  A cold cloudy disagreeable day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Rol Willson came here & stayed all night  Cals goslins sliped away about sunset & we could not find them [in margin] goslins ran away.

21st Sunday  A cold cloudy damp day  I did my choars was at the house all day came home about 9 and went to bed about 10 sick  Rol Willson was here till noon Caroline went to Naperville with Rol in afternoon.

22nd Monday  rather fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble & Sister.

23rd Tuesday  fine weather & a growing time  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick from trouble with Sister etc.

24th Wednesday  fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with trouble & Sister  Masons met at Aurora.”
