Hiram E. Leonard Diary, August 14 – 20, 1867

14th Wednesday  A fine warm day & night  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard & nearly sick Charles Leonard started to go to Bloomington about 4 P M in the stage [in margin] Charles Leonard started to Chicago.

15th Thursday  rather fine dry weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick.

16th Friday  rather fine dry weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 9 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick  Elder Hunts wife had a son tonight.

17th Saturday  A fine hot day & dry  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick Elder Hunts wife had a son this night.

18th Sunday  A fine pleasant warm day  I did my choars & went to the office & back was round the house all day a choaring etc went to the office with Frank Hollis about noon, I went to bed about 9 nearly sick  Jude Garys wife her third son this morning in a little over 2 years.

19th Monday  fine weather & dry  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10, tiard & nearly sick, Rol, Cal, Mrs Stone went to Naperville.

20th Tuesday  fine warm dry weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard & nearly sick with a cold & trouble.”

24th Wednesday  A fine hot day with a fine breeze  I did my choars was at the store till 9 when I got ready to go to Naperville with Sister, started in forenoon & come back & went in afternoon again got home about 6 went to store in evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10, the juror brought sister in as insane  Sam Wrights wife had a daughter today or tonight thurmometer stood at 100, Brooks Austin said to of died this week.

25th Thursday  A fine hot day some cloudy & a sprinkle or too  I did my choars was at the office all day came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick, Recd & put a belt on Sister carried off a load of oats 58 cts.

26th Friday  A fine hay day but airey  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 sick  T W Watson carried off my last load of oats today got 58cts a bushel Ed Brown came here.

27th Saturday  A fine hay day & hot  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick.

28th Sunday  A fine pleasant day but verry windy  I did my choars was at the office after breckfust came back choared round the house & went to the office again & back went to bed about 9, nearly sick R B Pollard got home this morning or in the night  Mrs Stone went to Carolines about 10 [in margin] R B Pollerd got home from Nebraska.

29th Monday  rather fine weather for haying  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick with trouble etc.

30th Tuesday  A fine hay day, I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard & sick with trouble, Mrs Stone went up to help Caroline.”

3rd Wednesday  A cloudy damp day with showers  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly worn out with trouble.

4th Thursday rather a warm day & cloudy not verry fine for the 4th I did my choars was at the office came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick [in margin] a still Fourth.

5th Friday  rather a cloudy showerey day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 sick & worn out with trouble.

6th Saturday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 10 sick & sorrowful.

7th Sunday  rather a fine cool day with some clouds  I did my choars was at the office about 9, came home choared round the house was about sick & went to bed about 10 & lay till near 2, fixed fence some etc  Sister was verry troublesome, Caroline called & eat supper, Mrs Stone went to C Owens  I did my choars & went to bed about 9 sick.

8th Monday  rather fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worn out.

9th Tuesday  fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worn out [in margin] Patterson & Estes came here.”

“29th Wednesday  rather cool cloudy damp weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 tiard & about worn out with sister, Ned Murry spoke at the Junction [in margin] Caroline was taken sick.

30th Thursday  A cold cloudy day  I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 tiard & worn out with Sister.

31st Friday  rather a fine pleasant day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 sick with a cold & worn out with sister, the Wheaton people had a county seat meeting at the Meth church Col Sweet, Vallett & others spoke.

June 1st Saturday  A cloudy damp day with several showers  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick & worne out  H H Cody spoke at the Methodist Church this evening & had quite an audiance & spoke well.

2nd Sunday A cloudy windy day & a growing cold  I did my choars was at the office after breckfust came back choared round fixed calf paster etc, went down at 2 with Willa Carpenter to office was at home the most of the day went to bed at 9  Mrs Stone went over the river, George went to Willsons.

3rd Monday  A fine cool day  I did my chaors was at home till after 3, when I went to Garys Mill to an election to remoove the county seat to Wheaton, came back & went to bed about 10 nearly sick with a cold there was a 117 vote to remoove to Wheaton.

4th Tuesday  A fine warm day & evening  I did my chaors was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick with a cold.”

21st Wednesday  rather a cold cloudy raw day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick William Hollister & Eva Carpenter were married by E. L. Hunt at Carpenters today & went to Chicago in afternoon & to St. Louis tomorrow  William Carpenter & Netta Fowler & S Heys & Sarah Jane Carpenter stood up with the bride & groom they had quite a wedding.

22nd Thursday  a cloudy cold disagreeable day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & about sick.

23rd Friday rather a cool cloudy day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

24th Saturday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

25th Sunday rather a fine pleasant day & evening but cool  I did my choars was at the office three times was at home the most of the day a choaring round was at Carolines some in evening came home at ____ wrote & went to bed at 9 nearly sick  Wm Whitny came & brought Gould wife & child up & Willson went & wife & carried them back as Whitny was selubrious  Gould got kick with a colt last night.

26th Monday  rather a fine cloudy day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick with a cold & lonely as can be.

27th Tuesday  rather a fine cool cloudy day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold, lonely.”

15th Thursday  fine cool weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ about sick.

16th Friday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

17th Saturday  A fine cool & some cloudy day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick  R B Pollard came home from Iowa  wher Ed Brown was.

18th Sunday  rather a fine morning but cloudy in middle & after part of day & sprinkled at about 2 or 3  I did my choars was round home the most of the day went to the office twice, the last time with Goulds & Whitny  his wife called at Willsons a short time & they went back as it began to sprinkle  Willson & Caroline eat supper here I was at Willsons in evening came home went to bed between 8 & 9 tiard & about sick with a cold Matta Gould stayed overnight.

19th Monday  rather a fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

20th Tuesday  rather fine weather for Nov  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely.”

23rd Thursday  A fine pleasant day but cold  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick [in margin] George White was here.

24th Friday  fine cool weather all most a frost every night  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

25th Saturday  A fine cool day most a frost  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick [in margin] Rol & Caroline went to Naperville.

26th Sunday  A fine pleasant cool day  I did my choars was round the house all day a choaring fixing fence etc did my choars went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

27th Monday  rather a fine day but cool  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick with a cold.

28th Tuesday  rather a cloudy damp disagreeable day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.”

26th Thursday  rather dull hay weather   I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely.

27th Friday  rather a cloudy day but cleared off at evening or towards night & was a beautiful evening  I did my choars was at the office all day and evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

28th Saturday  rather cloudy in morning but a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

29th Sunday  A fine day some clouds  I did my choars was round home the most of the day went to the office about 10 ½ marked in cord & choared round did my choars & went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & about sick, Mrs Gould was at Carolines, came about 11 & went home about 5 a hot day [in margin] Mrs Gould & youngest girl came to Carolines & called here.

30th Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

31st Tuesday  A fine day for harvest  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard sick & lonely.”

27th Wednesday  a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick [in margin] McNelly started with his family & everything for Iowa, Cal came from her fathers a foot.

28th Thursday  fine cool weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

29th Friday  rather a fine cool day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick.

30th Saturday  rather a fine day but some cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick  Rol sheared sheep at Vandervolgen.

July 1st Sunday  A cloudy damp day & wet more or less all the forenoon was cloudy & damp in afternoon  I did my choars was at home all day a choaring round the garden & house went to bed about 9 tiard lonely & about sick  R Willson & Nelson Derry went to Coral, started in the rain [in margin] Rol Willson went to Coral after his things—Mrs Fredenhagen was taken down with small pox.

2nd Monday  fine weather for the season  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick [in margin] Mrs Fredenhagen has got the small pox.

3rd Tuesday  fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick.”

22nd Friday  rather fine cool dry weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & about sick [in margin] Rol & Cal went to Naperville & Goulds.

23rd Saturday  A fine warm day  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & about sick.

24th Sunday A fine hot pleasant day with conciderable air verry dry I did my choars was at home a choaring round the most of the day went to store for Bet Billings at one oclock came back wrote some & took a nap, went to bed about 9 tiard & about sick.

25th Monday  rather fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick [in margin] Masons met at Elgin for to selabrate at Johns day.
