Hiram E. Leonard Diary, December 3 – 9, 1868

3rd Thursday  A fine day with a cool air  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Rolen Caroline & Eliza went to Aurora, Resseguie carried them.

4th Friday  A snowey morning & snowed the most of the day  snow to the depth of 6 or 8 inches  I did my choars was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out  Mrs Stone went up to Owens.

5th Saturday  rather a fine day & pretty good sleighing  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½.

6th Sunday  A fine day but cloudy  I did my choars was at the house a choaring round the most of the day went to the office about 1 for Jerry Pollard fixed my howell some, went to office in evening came home 7 went to bed at 9 nearly sick & worne out with trouble & Sister  Caroline, Eliza & Wallace went to hear a man speak.

7th Monday  A fine winter day I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick.

8th Tuesday  fine cold winter weather with 10 inches of snow on the ground  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister.

9th Wednesday  cold winter weather, I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.”

21st Saturday  rather fine day & muddy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  James Holenbeck & Emiline Owen were married at Aurora today.

22nd Sunday  A fine day but som cloudy but a fine evening  I did my choars was at the house the most of the day fixing chimy etc went to office at 5 night went to bed at night.

23rd Monday  rather fine weather for Nov  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

24th Tuesday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Sam McKellips drawed manure.”

27th Thursday  A fine hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Crosier thrashed on mine they had 576 bushels of oats & 13 ½ bush wheat.

28th Friday  A fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 10 tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble & sister  George McCauley from lotts creek came here at 11 & stayed all night, he wanted Eliza McNelly to go back with him Kenyon went to Aurora & got a revolver [in margin] Caroline sick.

29th Saturday  A fine day but sprinkled a little in the forenoon & was clouds  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly worne out with Sister, Mc Cauley started about 12 to go back to Iowa without Eliza but she wanted to go  Mooved to Aurora  [in margin] Caroline sick  McCuly started __________.

30th Sunday  A fine day but rather cloudy  I did my choars was round the house the most of the day went to store forenoon & evening came home & went to bed about 9, Rol Willson went to Naperville  Mrs Stone came here.

31st Monday  rather fine weather  I did my chaors was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with Sister.

September 1st Tuesday  rather a fine day for Sept  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with Sister  Daniel Kenyon set up all night & had 2 revolvers A wagon passed by & hitched at my store & three men came part way up the hill, one came up oposit Kenyons, the other two could not be seen, some one rattled the bedroom window Jose Helm sprang to the window & Kenyon with his revolver at the same time, soon after there was a quear smell which spread all over the house & came pretty near putting Kenyon to sleep he had to rais the window in the butry he looked bad, the house was clear of smell in 3 or 4 hours [in margin] Daniel Kenyon set up all night with a revolver in hand.

4th Saturday  A fine hot day  I did my choars was at the office all [day] came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at about 10 nearly sick & worned out, selebration at Wheaton & Aurora, Some one way & some the other way, Rol & Cal went to Wheaton.

5th Sunday  rather a fine hot day  some cloudy in afternoon & rained some about 4 I did my choars called at the office about 9 & in evening came home & went to bed at about 9 about sick  I picked some cherrys & choared round.

6th Monday  fine hot weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & worne out with Sister.

7th Tuesday  fine hot growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with Sister.

20th Saturday  A cold cloudy disagreeable day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Rol Willson came here & stayed all night  Cals goslins sliped away about sunset & we could not find them [in margin] goslins ran away.

21st Sunday  A cold cloudy damp day  I did my choars was at the house all day came home about 9 and went to bed about 10 sick  Rol Willson was here till noon Caroline went to Naperville with Rol in afternoon.

22nd Monday  rather fine weather for June  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble & Sister.

23rd Tuesday  fine weather & a growing time  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick from trouble with Sister etc.

24th Wednesday  fine growing weather  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & worne out with trouble & Sister  Masons met at Aurora.”

30th Saturday  A fine growing day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out with trouble with Sister.

31st Sunday  A fine warme cloudy growing day looks like showers  I did my choars was at the house a choaring round the most of the time, Mooved the milk ______ down celler etc was at the office 3 times came back & went to bed at 9  Rol Willson & Motta Gould were here to supper & Rolen paid me 40 dollars on note.

June 1st Monday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & worne out.

2nd Tuesday  rather fine but cloudy  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick & tiard  Mrs Bliss & Mrs Fowler went to Aurora to the Baptist Assosiation.

3rd Wednesday  Some showerey  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick [in margin] Perry came home with the navy owed.”

24th Friday  A cool raw day & damp  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick  James Hoyt got here about 12 or 1 [in margin] Waner moved into Doc Watermans house at night.

25th Saturday  More pleasant & cleared off in the afternoon  I did my choars was at the office all day James Hoyt came up with me about 10 & about 11 he went to Naperville  I came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ about sick  James Hoyt went to Williams at night.

26th Sunday  A fine pleasant warm day  I did my choars was at the house all day a choaring round etc & went to the office about noon & again in the evening came home & went to bed about 9 nearly sick  Mrs Stone came from hines in forenoon & went to Bostwicks in the afternoon came back before supper.

27th Monday  rather a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick, Lawson Bliss & wife went to Aurora & brought Dr Fry home with them, & he stayed Bliss over night.

28th Tuesday  A fine forenoon but rained in the afternoon & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Lawson carried to Naperville Dr Fry, to go Aurora.

29th Wednesday  A cloudy damp misty day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with trouble.”

8th Thursday  A fine pleasant hot day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worne out with trouble  Resseguie stack the first part of my oats, Charles R Leonard got here from New Lebanon at noon.

9th Friday  a fine forenoon but several showers in the afternoon  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick.

10th Saturday  A pretty fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 10 nearly sick  Charles went to Naperville in forenoon & to Carpenters in the afternoon with Mrs Bliss & got back in the evening [in margin] R B Pollard got home tonight.

11th Sunday  A fine cool pleasant day with some clouds  I did my choars went to office with Charles & back choared round the house some & laid down in the middle of day & went to bed about 9 tiard & nearly sick  Dr Charles Estes & wife & daughter were here after supper & stayed a short time with Mrs Bliss, they with Carpenters folks were at Bliss to tea  Charles went & stayed to Carpenters over night.

12th Monday  rather a fine day with a shower in afternoon or several showers  I was at the office all day came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick, Charles Leonard went to Aurora with Mrs Bliss & got home after dark  they went to P. Carpenters & took supper.

13th Tuesday  A cloudy muddy morning but more pleasant in afternoon I did my choars was at the office in the morning & got ready & started for Batavia with my sister about 10 oclock  got there at noon & got back at 3 P.M. was at the store the rest of the day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 10 nearly sick & worne out with trouble [in margin] I took Sister to the Insane hospital at Batavia.”

11th Thursday  last day of the fair  A cloudy morning & a fine day I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

12th Friday  cloud in morning a fine day  I did my choars was at the office all day came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & nearly sick with a cold.

13th Saturday  T Westcott got a Jerrys  A cloudy morning & fine day I did my choars was at the office all day evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick G Sidwell came to Winfield & stayed.

14th Sunday  A fine pleasant day & evening  I did my choars churned choared round the house  picked some apples etc went to the store towards night did my choars & went to bed at 9 nearly sick with a cold G Sidwell came while I was a eating breckfust, he was sick He came from Mrs Holmes yesterday & stayed at Winfield R Willson & Caroline went to H Goulds  R B Pollard 4th child & second daughter was born this morning.

15th Monday  rather a fine day & evening  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.

16th Tuesday  rather fine weather  I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

“9th Thursday fine cold dry weather for June, I did my choars was at the office the most of the day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick lonesome & lonely. Capt Ed Munk took the 3d degree in Masonry tonight.

“10th Friday rather a cold & a very cold night for June almost freezing. I did my choars was at the office till near 10 then went to Naperville with James Hoyt & H. D. Fowler to prove up the will, came home about 2 & stayed at the office all the rest of the day came here about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely Capt Ed Munk started Chattanooga today & sent 50 dollars to get William Wrays body by Ed Munk. We heered that Dr S H Potter was shot & his boddy on its way home [in margin] mair to horse cold Ed Munk started for Army.

“11th Saturday A very cold morning & day for June a little frost but the wind kep it off. I did my choars was at the office the most of the day, went with Pollard & T. Jones to Hoyts & appraised his personal property in forenoon came home at 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ tiard sick lonely etc, a lonesome day & night, Rollen Willson George Potter, Caroline & Elizabeth went to Aurora, got back at 5 oclock.

“12th Sunday A cold morning & a little frost very cold dry weather for June, I got up at 6 did my choars was at office, eat breckfust about 9 ½ choared round was at Hoyts, took my mair to Pollards paster on the Col Warrens came home from office 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick & lonely a little frost this morning.
