Hiram E. Leonard Diary, December 30, 1863 – January 5, 1864

30th Wednesday A fine pleasant winter day, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

31st Thursday A cold driving snow stormey morning & day & tedious day & night & verry cold. I did my choars was at the office all day, but did not go down in the evening on account of the cold windy snow storm.

January 1st Friday  A cold windy morning & snow a flying the most tedious day we have had for years the thermometer stood at from 23 to 25 degrees below zero in morning. I did my choars was at the office all day but not in evening went to bed about 9 nearly sick with a  cold.

2nd Saturday  a pretty cold day but not as cold as yesterday but the same in morning. I did my choars was at the office all day but not in evening. Went to bed at 9. The cars have been blocked up since Thursday night.

3rd Sunday A cold day but not as cold as yesterday. I did my choars was round the house the most of the day choaring round fixing hen house & stable went to office about noon with I Kenyon & called at Mr Hoyts was at home all the evening choaring & writing & went to bed 8 & 9.

4th Monday  A pretty cold day & evening, about 23 degrees below zero. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ sick.

5th Tuesday  A cold winter day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.”

23rd Wednesday  A fine pleasant day & a getting warm. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

24th Thursday  A fine pleasant day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½ nearly sick.

25th Friday A fine warm pleasant day for Christmas & thawed fast, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½. Mrs Potter & Charles went to Pelhams to Christmas & went home with Kenyons folks at night to go to Aurora.

26th Saturday  A cloudy damp day & mist a little all day & evening thawed fast, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½.

27th Sunday A cloudy damp disagreeable day & mist all day & evening. I did my choars was at home all day & evening choared round the house & fixed my pork & vinegar churned in evening & wrote some, went to bed between 8 & 9 nearly sick. Mrs Potter came back from Kenyon about 2 oclock.

28th Monday  rather disagreeable weather for winter. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

29th Tuesday  rather winterlike weather. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 nearly sick with a cold.”

16th Wednesday a stormy day rained & snow at night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

17th Thursday  A cold snow squalley windy day. A pretty tedious day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 1/2 . [in margin] Rol & Amo Wills got home.

18th Friday  A cold winter day nearly a foot of snow on the ground. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½.

19th Saturday A cold pleasant day for winter. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

20th Sunday  A cold cloudy & evening. I did my choars was at home all day & evening a choaring round & fixing to kill hogs wrote some in evening & went to bed about 8 ½ about sick.

21st Monday  rather fine weather for the season & good sleighing. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½.

22nd Tuesday  rather fine weather for winter. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.”

10th Thursday rather fine weather & warm for the season, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.

11th Friday  fine weather but some cloudy. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a  cold.

12th Saturday  A cloudy damp day & rained quite steady during the night, I did my choars, was at the office all day & evening came home a little after 8 by Hoyts & went to bed about 9 nearly sick with a cold, E acted like a fool & made a fool of it.

13th Sunday  A cloudy rainey cold day wind in North & North East a tedious day & evening, I did my choars eat breckfust about 9. I went to the store & got a tunnel? Came back by Hoyts & choared round the house & fixed the vinager some cleaned out pig pen etc, went to bed about 8 ½ or 9 about sick.

14th Monday rather fine weather for winter. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

15th Tuesday rather fine for winter rained some in evening & night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.”

5th Saturday A fine pleasant spring like day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

6th Sunday  A most beautiful day & evening, I did my choars was at home the most of the day & evening, went to the store twice after 3 oclock, I choared round the house the most of the day, was at home all the evening & went to bed about 8 or a little after, Caroline came down between 10 & 11, John & Eliza McNelly came between 11 & 12 and went home between 3 & 4, Mrs Potter & Charles went to meeting a little after 10 & got home a little after 3. Mrs Potter had the sick head ache & went to bed, Cal got supper.

7th Monday rather fine weather for winter. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.

27th Friday  rained some & snowed in the evening & night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

28th Saturday  rather a cold raw day with snow squalls. A cold night I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 & went to bed near 9 about sick.

29th Sunday  rather a pleasant day but cold & the ground covered with a light snow about one inch. I did my choars was round the house all day choaring in the celler went to the office about dark & back wrote some in the evening put up some apples & went to bed about 9 nearly sick with a cold.

30th Monday  fine weather for the season & winter, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening, came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

December 1st Tuesday  fine weather Dec. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.”

18th Wednesday  fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick. Watsons boy was buried.

19th Thursday  rather fine for Nov. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½. T W Watsons youngest child died this evening about 9.

20th Friday  rather a fine day but a cool air, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ and went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick with a  cold. Mrs Potter went Hoyts.

21st Saturday  fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home by Hoyts about 8 & went to bed about 9 nearly sick—T Watsons Babe was buried.

22nd Sunday  A fine day but some cloudy towards night. I did my choars was at home all day & evening banked the house some choared round etc. E Potter went Horths with Sol Williams started at 10 ½ & got home at 8 ½ cold. I went to bed about 9, tiard & nearly sick.

23rd Monday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.

24th Tuesday rather fine weather for Nov. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick.”

11th Wednesday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick. R Denham was buryed today.

12th Thursday rather fine weather & looks like Indian Summer. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed 9 ½. Joseph Munks remains arrived today.

13th Friday fine weather for the season, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a  cold.

14th Saturday  rather a fine day & evening it sprinkled some in afternoon & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ sick.

15th Sunday  A cool cloudy damp morning & spit snow a little. A cloudy damp day & evening, I did my choars went to the office about 10 for Green came back by Hoyts came home & banked my house some, started for my timber at one got to Sherman Willsons at about 3 & at home 5 ½ wrote some, went to bed 8 ½ nearly sick, Joseph Monk was buryed McLafferty preached.

16th Monday  rather fine weather for the season, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening. I came home about 8 ½ tiard & nearly sick went to bed about 9 ½. T W Watsons boy died, Dan Charles Potter _________ going to scool.

17th Tuesday  rather fine for Nov. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.”

4th Wednsday  rather a fine morning but rained about noon was a bad night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed soon afternoon Griffeth __________.

5th Thursday  rather a fine day & evening. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ went to bed 9 ½ Griffeth carried 1 load apples down to Frys Mill & brought back 2 barrels cider & 1 vinagar.

6th Friday  rather fine weather but cool & some cloudy. I did my choars was at the office all day & came home at sunset shut up was sick did not go to store after supper went to bed about 8 ½ sick.

7th Saturday  rather a fine day but some cloudy & squalled in the evening dark I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home at 8 & went to bed about 9 nearly sick with a  cold.

8th Sunday  rather a fine cool day, with some clouds cold air. I did my choars was at home all day & evening called at the office at noon with Hank Gould he came to Noonens. I called at the office at night came home & went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

9th Monday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick, R Dendram died tonight.

10th Tuesday  rather fine weather for the season. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick with a cold.”

28th Wednesday  a fine pleasant day but cool cloudy evening & rained before morning, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick, John Duck & M D Williams came from Elgin got here about dusk after Ws goods.

29th Thursday  A cloudy damp morning & began to rain about 8, wet conciderable in forenoon & hard in afternoon & evening & snowed some before morning. I did my choars was at the office till after 9 then went to Germy to get an attachment for M D Williams goods, Germn made the papers out & came down about one & did not like to give them to the constable, So I started for Naperville a little after one with R. Pollard & got my papers & got back before 4, Williams started for Elgin & we went to Fowlers & attached M D W. goods came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 nearly sick.

30th Friday  rather a cloudy disagreeable day & spit snow a little & snowed during the night conciderable. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ nearly sick. M D Williams got back at noon, & was a going to law me & make me smart, he shook his fist in my face & called me a liar & said it should be to my injury he sent P Graves over to talk with me in the evening & he agreed to settle it in the morning which he did.

31st Saturday  the ground was covered with snow, but conciderable of it went off before night. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 nearly sick, P Graves settled Williams notes paid $50, gave a notice of 34.80 & they went home.

November 1st Sunday  rather a cold morning but a fine pleasant day & evening quite warm in the middle of the day, I did my choars & choared round the house till near noon then went to store & got some curtains came back & choared round till ½ past one then started for my timber to show Dutchman where to chop got back about 4 did my choars was at home all evening wrote some & went to bed a little after 8 nearly sick with a cold. B S Harlow Esqr died today after being sick a few weeks.

3rd Tuesday  A cool but rather pleasant day. I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home 8 ½ went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick. B. S Harlow Esqr was burried today in afternoon & election was at Garys Mill today, Grifffeth drew a load apples.”
