Hiram E. Leonard Diary, December 22 – 28, 1864

22nd Thursday cool fine weather with quite good sleighing I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed at 9 tiard & sick.

23rd Friday fine winter weather for December I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed at 9 ½ nearly sick.

24th Saturday A fine pleasant day for winter I did my choars was at the office all day & in the evening came home about 8 ½ went to bed about 9 ½ [in margin] Caroline went to her fathers.

25th Sunday A cloudy damp day mist some & snow a little I did my choars went to the office before breckfust, after breckfust, I cleaned out my howels & choared round till noon, then went to Sherman Willsons & Rollen harnessed up & carried me into my timber, we got back at 3 & eat supper & I came home did my choars went to the office about 6 & made up the mail came back wrote some washed my feet & went to bed between 8 & 9 tiard & about sick [in margin] Caroline was at home I went to Sherman Willsons  Anna Jones was married to a Mr. Ugene Mann, of Batavia, Married in Chicago.

26th Monday rather fine weather, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

27th Tuesday rather fine weather for winter, I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard & nearly sick.

28th Wednesday rather a fine day & evening I did my choars was at the office all day & evening came home about 8 ½ & went to bed about 9 ½ tiard lonely & sick.”

  1. He didn’t celebrate Christmas! — maybe the day was a little different than usual — but working and choars every time. Although you often hear people say the olden days were better, I like my life better than
    Hiram Leonard’s.
