Civil War Diaries, October 23, 1862

Ashley Carpenter Diary Entry:

Oct. 23  Awoke feeling much better & called the roll as usual, but did not drill any.  I stood two hours on a soldiers beat that was formerly a tailor, while he sewed up my breeches pockets along the side & made the pocket hole on top so that things therein would not fall out.  Called the roll, made out the report & started for Head Quarters.  There was a mistake in giving us the countersign.  I was detained some time at the gate.  The counter sign was Romney we had it Bonney.”

Hiram Leonard Diary Entry:

23rd Thursday  A fine cool day & evening, I did my choars & finished picking my apples went to office in evening, came home about 9 by Hoyts & went to bed about 10 nearly sick.”
