Civil War Diaries, October 14, 1862

Ashley Carpenter Diary Entry:

“Oct. 14  Capt Rogers came in from Louisville.  Was glad he came because it formed a more substantial head to the Company.  He brought me four letters, three from home which caused unbidden tears to start from thoughts of home.

The penitentiary that lay just at the foot of the hill took fire at 6 oclock & its smouldering ruins breathed forth smoke in the morning.  One detached building was consumed.”

Hiram Leonard Diary Entry:

14th Tuesday  A fine cool day with a white frost, I did my choars was at the house all day & in the evening came home about 9 by Hoyts & went to bed about 10 nearly sick.  J. Pomeroy cut sugar cane [in margin] Pomeroy worked.”
