Civil War Diaries, October 4, 1862

Ashley Carpenter Diary Entry:

“Oct. 4  It commenced to rain in the morning.  We were ordered in line of battle at 9 o’clock.  Recd orders from Gen. Ward with reference to marching.  We traveled with hard crackers & very poor, & sometimes no water.  We stopped at Shelbyville for the night.  At 9 oclock we laid down at night upon the ground.  I was so cold at night that I had to get up twice in the night to warm at the campfire. ”

Hiram Leonard Diary Entry:

4th Saturday  A cool pleasant day with some clouds, I did my choars went to office & then carried some wheat to mill for Wrays folks, then finished moving the thing that were in Hoyts house choared round was at office, come home about 9 & went to bed about 10 nearly sick.”
