Civil War Diaries, September 14, 1862

Ashley Carpenter Diary Entry:

“Sept. 14  A beautiful Sabbath morning burst its almost sacred light upon fair Nature.  We were favored with the preaching of two sermons.  I was detailed as Seargent of the first relief guards consisting of 40 men.  Many of the friends and relatives from Chicago were in Campo to see us.

Had a good dinner from the generosity of Julia Dodges.  The night was consumed in alternate duty & relief.”

Hiram Leonard Diary Entry:

14th Sunday  A fine warm pleasant day & evening.  I did my choars was at Hoyts & office came back cleaned out the hous & celler some & choared round called at Hoyts in evening came home before 9 & went to bed.  Wm McNelly came out & started for home about 3 ½ clock PM.”
