Civil War Diaries, September 10, 1862

Ashley Carpenter Diary Entry:

“Sept. 10  Reported at headquarters at nine o’clock & then the Regiment escorted by the light guard band started for Camp Douglas. Being unwell I went with father to the camp in the street cars.

Dinner was furnished on the grounds at 4 o’clock.  The boys slept on the ground with hay as blankets.  I went down to Aunt Beecher’s.”

Hiram Leonard Diary Entry:

10th Wednesday  rather a fine day with a shower & a rainy night.  I did my choars was at the office the most of the day came home by Hoyts about 8 got here at 9 & soon went to bed, Caroline went to Chicago to see Wray to Camp Douglas & stayed all night to the Wrights Hotel Doctors wife went & Fairbanks wife, 4 deaths in town today.”
